Slack MCP server: what Slack offers, and what SociaHive adds

A Slack MCP server lets an AI assistant work with Slack through tools. Slack runs an official one at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp for searching and reading your workspace. SociaHive's hosted server at https://www.sociahive.com/api/mcp does something narrower: it schedules and publishes posts to Slack channels from the same chat that posts to your social accounts.

Does Slack have an MCP server?

Yes. Slack runs an official server at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp. Its tools search messages, files, users and channels, read channels and threads, send, schedule and draft messages, work with canvases and lists, and add reactions. Access goes through a Slack app that your workspace admin approves, and Slack lists Claude.ai, Claude Code, Perplexity and Cursor as partner clients. It is the right choice for reading and searching your workspace. SociaHive does none of that reading. It schedules posts to channels alongside your social accounts.

How to connect Slack to your AI assistant

  1. 1

Connect your Slack account to SociaHive

Sign up for SociaHive and connect Slack under Connected accounts. The 7-day trial needs no card.

  2. 2

Add the SociaHive MCP server to your AI assistant

Add https://www.sociahive.com/api/mcp as a connector or MCP server in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or another MCP client, then sign in with SociaHive.

  3. 3

    Ask for what you want

Type a request such as "Schedule this announcement to #general for Monday at 9am: "The office is closed Friday."". Anything that goes live asks you to confirm first.

Step-by-step setup: Claude, Claude Code, Cursor.

Things to ask about Slack

  • A scheduled Slack message you can see on the calendar.

  • The message goes to the channel as the SociaHive bot.

  • The scheduled time changes; nothing is sent early.

  • One calendar of Slack messages and social posts.

How to install the Slack MCP server

Slack's server is added in an MCP client, and your workspace admin has to approve the client. The endpoint is https://mcp.slack.com/mcp, and sign-in is OAuth. Slack says "Workspace admins can approve and manage all MCP client integrations."

Steps for a partner client

  1. Open Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cursor or Perplexity, the clients Slack lists.
  2. Add the Slack server in that client's connector or MCP settings.
  3. Sign in with Slack and approve the permissions.
  4. If your admin has not approved the app, ask them to approve it.

Slack's page says "Only apps published in the Slack Marketplace and internal apps can use MCP," and that clients need a registered Slack app. It does not support SSE connections. VS Code is not on Slack's partner list, so check Slack's docs before relying on it.

SociaHive's server is separate. Add https://www.sociahive.com/api/mcp to your client, as described on the Claude Code or Cursor page, and connect your Slack workspace in SociaHive once.

Slack MCP server vs SociaHive: which one do you need?

Use Slack's official server when the AI should read your workspace: summarise a channel, find a decision in a thread, search files, or draft a reply. SociaHive cannot do any of that.

Use SociaHive when the job is publishing on a schedule. You ask in one chat for an announcement to go to #general on Monday and a matching post to Instagram or LinkedIn the same day. It lands on one calendar, and you can move or cancel either one.

A fair note. Slack's own server can also send and schedule messages, as you. SociaHive posts as the SociaHive bot, which suits team announcements and content calendars but not messages that should look personal.

You can run both. Slack's server for reading, SociaHive for the scheduled content.

Not sure yet? Start with Slack's server if your goal is "help me work in Slack," and SociaHive if your goal is "keep my content calendar going, including Slack."

Slack limits your AI should know

Message lengthSlack recommends at most 4,000 characters per message, and SociaHive enforces that
ImagesUp to 10 per message, JPEG or PNG. No video
ChannelsPublic channels (the bot does not need to join them) and private channels the bot is in
Posting rateAbout one message per second per channel
Posts asThe SociaHive bot, not your own user

What it can't do on Slack

  • Read channels, threads or direct messages.
  • Search your Slack workspace.
  • Add reactions.
  • Edit or delete a message after it has been sent.
  • Post video.
  • Show message stats; Slack has none to read.

Run Slack from your AI.

The MCP server is in the trial and every paid plan. 7-day free trial. No credit card required.

FAQ

Does Slack have an MCP server?

Yes. Slack runs an official MCP server at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp. It can search and read your workspace and send, schedule and draft messages. Access is through an approved Slack app, with Claude.ai, Claude Code, Perplexity and Cursor listed as partner clients.

How do I install the Slack MCP server?

Add https://mcp.slack.com/mcp in a supported client such as Claude Code or Cursor, then sign in with Slack through OAuth. Your workspace admin must approve the app. For SociaHive, add https://www.sociahive.com/api/mcp and connect your workspace once.

Is the Slack MCP server down?

Check Slack's status page at status.slack.com first. If Slack is up, the usual cause is an expired sign-in or an app your admin has not approved, so reconnect the server in your client. For SociaHive, a failed post shows an error on the post.

What is the Slack MCP server URL?

Slack's official endpoint is https://mcp.slack.com/mcp, using Streamable HTTP. SociaHive's separate server for scheduling posts to Slack and social accounts is https://www.sociahive.com/api/mcp. Both are added the same way in an MCP client.

Can I use a Slack MCP server in Cursor, VS Code or Claude Code?

Slack lists Cursor and Claude Code as partner clients. VS Code is not on that list, so check Slack's docs. SociaHive's server works in Cursor and Claude Code too, with setup steps on the connect pages.
