Pick one to see the plan

The best Buffer alternatives in 2026 are SociaHive if you also want Instagram comment-to-DM automation in the same tool, Publer for the lowest paid price, Later for visual Instagram planning, and Metricool for analytics. Buffer charges per connected channel (from $5 per channel per month billed yearly), so its bill grows with every profile you add. Most alternatives bill per plan, per brand or per user, which is cheaper once you manage more than a few channels.

This guide compares ten tools on price, free plan, platforms and whether they automate DMs. Prices were read from each vendor's own site on October 22, 2026; see Sources at the end.

Why people leave Buffer

Buffer is simple and good at queues. The reasons to look elsewhere are specific:

1. SociaHive: scheduling plus comment-to-DM

SociaHive schedules to 22 platforms and automates Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp conversations (Telegram on Pro), with unlimited contacts on every plan.

  • Pricing: free plan with up to 3 accounts and 30 scheduled posts a month; every signup gets a 7-day trial that includes automation; paid plans start at $29 a month flat, not per channel
  • Strengths: comment-to-DM and keyword flows next to the scheduler, optimal-time planning, and an MCP server so Claude or ChatGPT can schedule posts for you
  • Trade-offs: it does not schedule Instagram Stories and Reels or Facebook Stories and Groups, and it has no deep analytics suite. Buffer's interface is simpler for a pure queue
  • Best for: creators and small brands who would otherwise pay for a scheduler and a DM tool. See comment-to-DM and the all-in-one guide

2. Later: visual planning

Later sells Starter at $18.75 a month, Growth at $37.50 and Scale at $82.50, all billed yearly, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. Growth and Scale add a social inbox for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok conversations.

  • Strengths: visual calendar, Instagram and TikTok focus
  • Trade-offs: no free plan, and Starter has no inbox. The page does not describe automated DMs
  • Best for: brands that plan feeds visually. See Is Later worth it

3. Hootsuite: team scale at a team price

Hootsuite lists Standard from $99, Professional from $199 and Advanced up to $399, per user per month, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. Its pricing page lists automated inbox replies and DM responses on Professional.

  • Strengths: deep team workflows and an inbox with automated replies
  • Trade-offs: per-user billing and a high entry price
  • Best for: large teams. See Hootsuite alternatives

4. Publer: the cheapest paid scheduler

Publer's help center lists the Free plan with 3 social accounts, Professional from $5 a month and Business from $10 for a base setup, with yearly billing 20% cheaper. Extra accounts cost extra.

  • Strengths: low price, a free plan, analytics and bulk tools
  • Trade-offs: no DM automation found on its pricing material, and its own pages disagree on trial length (7 or 14 days)
  • Best for: people who only need scheduling at the lowest cost

5. SocialBee: evergreen recycling

SocialBee lists Bootstrap at $24 a month billed yearly ($29 monthly) for 5 profiles, Accelerate at $40 ($49) for 10, and Pro at $82 ($99) for 25. There is a 14-day trial and no free plan. Its Engage module manages DMs and comments for Facebook Pages and Instagram Business, but the page does not describe automated DM replies.

  • Strengths: content categories and recycling
  • Trade-offs: no free plan
  • Best for: brands that republish evergreen content

6. Metricool: analytics, and automated comment-to-DM

Metricool has a free plan (1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, no LinkedIn or X). Starter is $20 a month billed yearly ($25 monthly) for up to 5 brands. Its pricing page lists Flows for turning comments into DMs, replying to DMs by keyword and turning Story replies into DMs, free of charge for a limited time on paid plans, not on Free.

  • Strengths: strong analytics and competitor tracking, and real comment-to-DM Flows
  • Trade-offs: priced per brand, and the Flows promotion has no stated end date, so its future price is unknown
  • Best for: analytics-first marketers. See Metricool alternatives

7. Postiz: open source

Postiz lists Standard at $23 a month billed yearly ($29 monthly) for 5 channels, up to Ultimate at $79 for 100 channels, with a 7-day trial. It can be self-hosted. Its page describes post-based automation (plugs, scheduled comments) but not DM automation.

  • Best for: teams that want to self-host or avoid vendor lock-in

8. Agorapulse: inbox and reporting

Agorapulse lists Standard from $79 per user a month on annual billing, Professional from $119 and Advanced from $149, with a 30-day trial. Its automation is moderation rules (hide, label, assign), not DM funnels. See Agorapulse alternatives.

  • Best for: agencies that live in the inbox

9. Vista Social: scheduling with DM automation

Vista Social lists Professional at $99 a month ($950 yearly) for 15 profiles and 10,000 DM contacts, Advanced at $199 for 30 profiles, and Scale at $449. There is a 14-day trial and no free plan. The page describes DM automations that respond to comments and DMs, and advanced lead-collection flows on Advanced.

  • Trade-offs: priced for agencies; the page's user limits are inconsistent
  • Best for: agencies who want scheduling and DM tooling together

10. Sprout Social: enterprise reporting

Sprout Social lists Essentials at $79 per seat billed annually ($99 monthly) for up to 5 profiles, Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399, with a 30-day trial. Its page does not describe DM automation.

  • Best for: enterprise teams that need listening and reporting

When to stay with Buffer

Stay if you manage three or fewer channels (the free plan costs nothing), you value a plain queue, and you do not need DM automation. Buffer's per-channel price is also hard to beat at 3 to 5 channels on Essentials.

How to choose

  • You also want comment-to-DM: SociaHive or Metricool
  • Lowest price scheduling: Publer, or Buffer's free plan
  • Visual Instagram planning: Later
  • Many clients and reporting: Agorapulse, Vista Social or Sprout Social
  • Self-hosting: Postiz
  • Leaving ManyChat too: see ManyChat alternatives

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Buffer alternative?

It depends on the gap. SociaHive is the pick when you also want Instagram comment-to-DM automation, Publer when price is the only goal, Later for visual Instagram planning, and Metricool for analytics.

Is there a free Buffer alternative?

Yes. SociaHive's free plan covers up to 3 accounts and 30 scheduled posts a month. Publer's free plan covers 3 social accounts, and Metricool's covers 1 brand with 20 posts a month.

Which Buffer alternative automates DMs?

SociaHive, Metricool (Flows) and Vista Social describe comment-to-DM or DM automation on their own pages. Hootsuite lists automated inbox replies on Professional. Buffer, Publer, Later, Postiz and Sprout Social do not describe it.

Is Buffer cheaper than SociaHive?

For three channels on Buffer Essentials it is $15 a month billed yearly, against $29 for SociaHive Creator, but Buffer's free plan is also limited to 10 scheduled posts per channel. Past about six channels, or once you want DM automation, a flat plan is usually cheaper.

Can Claude or ChatGPT schedule posts for me?

Yes on SociaHive, via its MCP server, during the trial and on paid plans.
