Pick one to see the plan
To schedule a Slack message, type it, then click the arrow beside the paper plane icon instead of pressing Enter, and pick a time. On mobile, tap and hold the paper plane icon. That is how Slack's help center describes it, and your scheduled messages wait under Drafts & sent, in the Scheduled tab.
This guide covers the built-in option on desktop and phone, where scheduled messages live, recurring messages, and how to schedule Slack and social posts together.
How to schedule a message in Slack
Slack has scheduling built in, so you do not need an app for a one-off message. It works in a channel, a direct message or a thread, per Slack's help article.
- Open the channel, DM or thread and click the message field.
- Type your message and add any files, emoji, mentions or formatting.
- Click the arrow icon beside the paper plane icon instead of pressing Enter.
- Pick one of the suggested times, or choose a custom date and time.
The message waits in your Scheduled tab and goes out at that time. Stanford's IT team, in its write-up of the feature, notes you can schedule down to the minute and up to 120 days ahead.
Schedule Slack messages on iPhone and Android
On the phone, type the message, then tap and hold the paper plane icon in the Slack app on iOS or Android, as Slack's help describes. A menu of times appears. This is the answer to "schedule slack message iphone": hold the send icon instead of tapping it.
Some people tap the arrow and the message sends at once. If that happens, you tapped instead of held. Hold until the menu appears.
Where to find, edit and cancel scheduled messages
Scheduled messages live under Drafts & sent, in the Scheduled tab. On desktop, click Drafts & sent at the top of the sidebar; on mobile, tap Drafts & Sent at the top of the Home tab, per Slack's help article.
On desktop, hover over a scheduled message to see its options, such as edit or delete. On mobile, tap and hold it to edit, reschedule, send, cancel or delete it.
| What you want | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| See what is scheduled | Drafts & sent, Scheduled tab | Home, Drafts & Sent, Scheduled tab |
| Change the text or time | Hover the message, then edit | Tap and hold, then edit or reschedule |
| Send it now | Hover the message for its options | Tap and hold, then send |
| Cancel it | Hover the message, then delete | Tap and hold, then cancel or delete |
Will people know you scheduled a Slack message?
Recipients see a normal message from you, posted at the time you chose. Slack's pages that we could open do not describe any "scheduled" label in the channel, and we found no official statement either way, so treat this as likely rather than guaranteed.
Slack also does not show read receipts for messages in the way some chat apps do. People see your message when they open the channel.
How to schedule recurring Slack messages
The built-in option sends a message once. For a message that repeats, such as a weekly reminder, use a workflow: Slack has a "Send a scheduled message" template for exactly this, described in its help article on recurring messages.
On desktop, open Agents & tools in the sidebar, go to Workflows and pick the "Send a scheduled message" template. Set the start date, time and frequency, choose the channel and write the message, then click Finish Up and Publish. Slack's Workflow Builder guide lists workflows as available on paid plans.
On any plan, the /remind command can repeat a channel reminder, for example every Monday at 9am. Those are reminders from Slackbot, not a message from you.
Can you schedule Slack messages with a Slack scheduler app?
Yes. A Slack scheduler app adds things the built-in option lacks, such as repeating messages, templates and posting to many channels. The tradeoff is that the message usually comes from the app's bot, not from you.
If your Slack messages are announcements that belong on the same calendar as your social posts, a social scheduler can cover both. For other cases, the built-in option is enough.
Schedule Slack messages and social posts together
SociaHive can schedule messages to Slack channels next to posts for your social accounts, so announcements and content sit on one calendar. You connect your Slack workspace once with Sign in with Slack, and posts go out as the SociaHive bot.
It posts to public channels and to private channels the bot is in. Messages can be up to 4,000 characters with up to 10 images (JPEG or PNG), and no video. It cannot read your channels or edit a message after it is sent. See the content scheduler and pricing, or read the social media content scheduling guide. For a calendar to plan around, try the content calendar generator or this content calendar template.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule a message in Slack?
Type your message, then click the arrow icon beside the paper plane icon instead of pressing Enter, and pick a time. On mobile, tap and hold the paper plane icon. Your scheduled messages then wait under Drafts & sent, in the Scheduled tab.
How do I find scheduled messages on Slack?
Click Drafts & sent at the top of the sidebar on desktop, then the Scheduled tab. On mobile, tap Drafts & Sent at the top of the Home tab. From there you can edit, reschedule, send or delete a message before it goes out.
Can I schedule recurring Slack messages?
Not with the built-in option, which sends once. Use the "Send a scheduled message" workflow template, which sets a start date, time and frequency for a channel. Slack lists workflows as a paid-plan feature. The /remind command can also repeat a reminder, which comes from Slackbot.
Can I schedule a Slack message on my iPhone?
Yes. Type the message in the Slack app, then tap and hold the paper plane icon instead of tapping it. A menu of times appears. Pick one or choose a custom time. Android works the same way.
Does Slack tell people a message was scheduled?
Slack's pages we could open do not mention a scheduled label. Recipients see a normal message from you at the time it sends. Check your own workspace once with a test message if it matters.
