The safest social media image sizes in 2026 are 1080 × 1350 px for Instagram and LinkedIn portrait posts, 1200 × 630 px for Facebook link images, 1000 × 1500 px for Pinterest pins and 3840 × 2160 px for a YouTube thumbnail. Vertical video is 1080 × 1920 px. Profile pictures are square: 400 × 400 px is a good default.
Each number below is labelled "Official" (stated on the platform's own help page, linked) or "Common practice" (no exact size published, but widely used).
Social media image sizes at a glance
The table gives the main image size for each platform and where the number comes from. Official means the platform's help page states it. Common practice means the platform publishes only a ratio range or nothing, and creators use the size because it works.
| Platform | Main image size | Ratio | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed | 1080 × 1350 px portrait | 4:5 (range 1.91:1 to 3:4) | Width and range official, 1080 × 1350 common practice |
| Vertical video (Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts) | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Common practice |
| Facebook feed link image | 1200 × 630 px | 1.91:1 | Official (Meta for Developers) |
| LinkedIn post | 1080 × 1350 px portrait, 1200 × 627 px landscape | 3:1 to 4:5 allowed | Ratio official, sizes common practice |
| X post | 1600 × 900 px | 16:9 | Common practice |
| Pinterest pin | 1000 × 1500 px | 2:3 | Official (ad specs) |
| YouTube thumbnail | 3840 × 2160 px, at least 640 px wide | 16:9 | Official |
| YouTube Shorts thumbnail | 2160 × 3840 px, at least 640 px tall | 9:16 | Official |
Instagram's photo resolution page says photos are sized down to 1080 px wide and lists the supported ratio range, and its Reel size page allows 1.91:1 to 9:16 at a minimum of 720 px. Meta for Developers recommends 1200 × 630 px for link images. Pinterest's ad specs recommend 1000 × 1500 px and warn that pins taller than 2:3 might get cut off. YouTube's thumbnail help recommends 3840 × 2160 px for videos and 2160 × 3840 px for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 px (videos) or minimum height of 640 px (Shorts).
Profile picture sizes
A profile picture is a square that most platforms show as a circle, so centre your face or logo and leave margin. A 400 × 400 px upload meets or beats the official number on every platform in the table.
| Platform | Profile picture size | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 320 × 320 px, shown as a circle | Common practice | |
| 320 × 320 px, shown at 176 × 176 px on computers | Official (Pages) | |
| X | 400 × 400 px, up to 2 MB | Official |
| 400 × 400 px minimum, up to 7680 × 4320 px | Official | |
| YouTube | 98 × 98 px displayed, 800 × 800 px common, up to 15 MB | Display size official, 800 common practice |
| TikTok | 200 × 200 px or larger | Common practice |
| 400 × 400 px or larger | Common practice |
Facebook's Page help article says the picture displays at 176 × 176 px on computers and should be 320 × 320 px for best quality. X Help recommends 400 × 400 px and a 2 MB limit. LinkedIn's photo help sets 400 × 400 px as the minimum and 7680 × 4320 px as the maximum. YouTube's channel branding help says the picture renders at 98 × 98 px and accepts files up to 15 MB. Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest publish no exact size.
Cover and banner sizes
Banner and cover sizes vary much more between platforms than profile pictures do, and X, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest all publish exact numbers. Every size in this table is official, so check the linked help pages if a platform changes its layout.
| Platform | Banner or cover size | Source |
|---|---|---|
| X header | 1500 × 500 px | Official |
| LinkedIn personal background | 1584 × 396 px | Official |
| LinkedIn Page cover | 1512 × 256 px | Official |
| Facebook Page cover | 851 × 315 px, at least 400 × 150 px | Official |
| YouTube banner | 2560 × 1440 px, at least 2048 × 1152 px | Official |
| Pinterest profile cover | at least 800 × 450 px, 16:9 | Official |

Instagram image sizes
Upload Instagram feed photos 1080 px wide: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) is the usual portrait, and 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) is the tallest Instagram supports. Reels and Stories use 1080 × 1920 px. Bigger files add nothing, because Instagram sizes uploads down to 1080 px wide.
Whether to pick 4:5 or 3:4 depends on the profile grid, which the Instagram post size guide explains. For video, see Instagram Reel size. The Instagram photo resizer crops a photo to each size, and the how-to on resizing images for Instagram walks through it. For Facebook video, see Facebook video size.
Facebook image sizes
For Facebook, use 1200 × 630 px for link images and keep photos close to 1.91:1 so the whole image shows in the feed. Meta recommends at least 600 × 315 px for link images. Page profile pictures are 320 × 320 px and the cover is 851 × 315 px.
Facebook crops covers differently on computers and phones, and the profile picture overlaps part of the cover, so keep text near the middle and away from that corner.

LinkedIn image sizes
LinkedIn accepts post images with a ratio from 3:1 to 4:5, so 1080 × 1350 px portrait, 1080 × 1080 px square and 1200 × 627 px landscape all work. A personal banner is 1584 × 396 px and a Page cover is 1512 × 256 px.
LinkedIn publishes file limits, video specs and ad sizes as well. The full list is in the guide to LinkedIn post sizes, and the LinkedIn photo resizer crops to them.
X (Twitter) image sizes
For X, a profile photo is 400 × 400 px, a header is 1500 × 500 px and a post image works well at 1600 × 900 px (16:9). X Help publishes the profile and header sizes but no required post image size, so 1600 × 900 px is common practice.
X lets you attach several photos to one post; see X Help on posting photos. For text limits, read the X character limit guide.
TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest image sizes
TikTok photos and covers use 1080 × 1920 px (common practice), YouTube thumbnails use 3840 × 2160 px (official) and Pinterest pins use 1000 × 1500 px (official). Each platform has its own guide with the full size list, linked below.
- TikTok: 9:16 fills the screen. See TikTok image sizes.
- YouTube: the banner is 2560 × 1440 px. See YouTube image sizes.
- Pinterest: a 2:3 ratio is recommended. See Pinterest image sizes.
Community platforms have small images of their own: see Discord image sizes, Reddit banner size and Slack emoji size. To plan which sizes you need each week, use a social media content calendar template, and the social media image resizer turns one picture into the right crop for every network.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1080 × 1350 4:5 or 3:4?
1080 × 1350 is 4:5, because 1080 divided by 1350 is 0.8. A 3:4 image at the same width is 1080 × 1440 px. Instagram supports both, and 4:5 is the more common portrait size. The Instagram post size guide explains when 3:4 is worth using.
Is 1920 × 1080 good for social media?
Yes, 1920 × 1080 px works on most platforms because 16:9 is a supported shape. It suits YouTube, X and LinkedIn landscape posts. On Instagram it fits inside the allowed ratio range but looks small, so 1080 × 1350 px uses more screen. For vertical video or Stories, flip it to 1080 × 1920 px.
What is the best size for a social media graphic?
Match the platform's feed shape: 1080 × 1350 px for Instagram and LinkedIn portrait, 1200 × 630 px for link images and 1000 × 1500 px for Pinterest. To cover several networks with one design, export a 1080 × 1350 px version and a 1080 × 1080 px version, and keep key content in the centre.
What size should a profile picture be?
Use a square of at least 400 × 400 px. LinkedIn requires 400 × 400 px at minimum and X recommends it, while Facebook recommends 320 × 320 px. Most platforms show the picture as a circle, so keep the subject in the middle with margin around it.
