Pick one and watch it get built
The Discord banner size is 960 × 540 px (16:9) for a server banner and 600 × 240 px for a profile banner. A Discord profile picture (pfp) is 128 × 128 px and a server icon is 512 × 512 px, both square images that Discord shows as circles.
That covers the four images most people ask about. Below is every Discord image size in one table, then what each one is for, how Discord crops it, which file types it takes, and which ones need Nitro or server boosts.
Every Discord image size at a glance
| Image | Size | Ratio | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pfp | 128 × 128 px | 1:1 | Nothing |
| Profile banner | 600 × 240 px | 5:2 | Nitro |
| Server icon | 512 × 512 px | 1:1 | Nothing |
| Server banner | 960 × 540 px | 16:9 | Boost level 2 |
| Invite background | 1920 × 1080 px | 16:9 | Boost level 1 |
| Emoji | 128 × 128 px | 1:1 | Nothing |
| Sticker | 320 × 320 px | 1:1 | Nothing |
The pfp and server icon are shown as circles; the rest keep their shape. Animated versions have their own rules, covered in each section below.
If you already have the image and only need it at the right size, the Discord photo resizer crops one picture to the pfp, server icon, both banners, the invite background and emoji sizes in your browser.
Discord pfp size
A Discord profile picture is 128 × 128 px, square. That is the smallest size that stays sharp. You can upload a larger square, such as 512 × 512 px, and Discord scales it down, which looks better on high-resolution screens.
Discord shows your pfp as a circle, so the corners of the square are never seen. Keep your face or logo in the middle with some space around it. The pfp is also shown very small next to every message, so a close crop works better than a wide photo.
- File types: PNG, JPG or GIF.
- Animated pfp: a GIF only animates with Nitro. Without Nitro, Discord uses a still image.
- Different pfp per server: setting a separate avatar for one server also needs Nitro.
When you upload, Discord opens a crop step with a zoom slider and a circle overlay. Drag the image until the part you want sits inside the circle, then apply.
Discord profile banner size
The profile banner is 600 × 240 px, a 5:2 strip at the top of your profile card. It is much wider than a normal photo, so a landscape picture loses a large band at the top and bottom when it is cropped to fit.
Profile banners are a Nitro feature. Without Nitro you can only choose a banner colour. With Nitro the banner can be a PNG, JPG or an animated GIF.
Your profile picture overlaps the lower left part of the banner. Keep text, faces and logos in the upper middle or right side so they are not hidden behind your avatar. Discord shows a crop step when you upload, where you can move the image inside the frame.
Discord server icon size
A Discord server icon is 512 × 512 px, square. Discord accepts images down to 128 × 128 px, but those look soft on large screens, so 512 is the safer size.
In the server list the icon is drawn as a small circle, and it turns into a rounded square when the server is selected. At that size detail disappears, so one to three bold letters, a short abbreviation or a single symbol read best. If you don't have a logo yet, the Discord server icon maker turns letters or an emoji into a 512 × 512 PNG and shows how it looks inside the circle.
- File types: PNG, JPG or GIF.
- Animated icon: a GIF icon needs server boost level 1.
- Who can change it: members with the Manage Server permission, in Server Settings, then Overview.
Discord server banner size
The server banner is 960 × 540 px, 16:9, the same shape as a widescreen video frame. It shows at the top of the channel list, above the channels. Because the channel list is narrow, the banner is displayed much smaller than its file size, so a simple image or a short title in the middle works better than fine print.
A still server banner needs server boost level 2. An animated GIF banner needs boost level 3.
A normal landscape photo fits the server banner with little loss, because 16:9 is a common photo and slide shape. Do not reuse a profile banner here: the 5:2 strip would be cropped hard at the sides.
Discord server invite background size
The server invite background is 1920 × 1080 px, 16:9. It is the large image people see behind your invite when they open your server's invite link. It needs server boost level 1.
This is the one Discord image with room for a detailed photo or artwork, since it fills a whole screen. Keep the main subject near the center, because the invite card sits on top of the middle of the image and screens of different shapes cut the edges differently.

Discord emoji size
A custom Discord emoji is 128 × 128 px, square, and must be under 256 KB. Upload a PNG, JPG or GIF. Emoji are shown at text size next to words, so use a PNG with a transparent background and a bold, simple shape.
Every server can upload emoji without boosts. A server starts with 50 static and 50 animated emoji slots, and boost levels raise that to 100, 150 and 250 of each. Emoji names need at least two characters and use letters, numbers and underscores.
Anyone can use a server's static emoji inside that server. Using animated emoji, or using a server's emoji in other servers, needs Nitro.
Discord sticker size
A Discord sticker is exactly 320 × 320 px and must be under 512 KB. Upload it as a PNG, or as an APNG for an animated sticker. Like emoji, a transparent background makes it look clean in chat.
Servers get 5 sticker slots without boosts, then 15 at boost level 1, 30 at level 2 and 60 at level 3. Members can use a server's stickers inside that server; sending them in other servers needs Nitro.
What needs Nitro and what needs server boosts
Two different things unlock Discord images. Nitro is a personal subscription and unlocks images on your own profile. Server boosts are given to a server by its members and unlock images for the whole server. A server reaches level 1 with 2 boosts, level 2 with 7 and level 3 with 14.
| Feature | Unlocked by |
|---|---|
| Animated pfp (GIF) | Nitro |
| Profile banner | Nitro |
| Separate pfp or banner per server | Nitro |
| Using animated emoji | Nitro |
| Using a server's emoji or stickers in other servers | Nitro |
| Animated server icon | Server boost level 1 |
| Server invite background | Server boost level 1 |
| Server banner | Server boost level 2 |
| Animated server banner | Server boost level 3 |
| More emoji and sticker slots | Each boost level |
Nitro Basic, the cheaper plan, does not include the profile banner or an animated pfp. Those come with full Nitro.
How Discord crops your images
Discord never asks for an exact pixel size at upload. It takes your file, opens a crop step for the pfp, the profile banner, the server icon and the server banner, and fits the image to the frame. Three things decide what survives:
- The shape. A square pfp or icon becomes a circle, so the corners go. A photo uploaded as a banner keeps only the strip that fits 5:2 or 16:9.
- Where you place it. The crop step lets you zoom and drag. If the subject is near an edge of the original, it can be hard to fit inside the frame.
- What covers it. Your pfp sits over the profile banner's lower left. The invite card sits over the middle of the invite background.
The easiest way to avoid surprises is to crop to the right shape before uploading, with the subject in the middle. Upload a photo to the Discord photo resizer, tick the sizes you need and download PNGs that already match Discord's shapes, so the crop step in Discord has nothing left to cut.
Tips for sharp Discord images
- Start larger, not smaller. An image stretched up from a smaller original looks blurry on large screens. Upload at the recommended size or above.
- Use PNG for logos, emoji and text. JPG adds soft edges around sharp lines and has no transparency.
- Keep animations in a GIF editor. Resizers that export a PNG keep one frame, so an animated pfp or banner needs a tool that keeps every frame.
- Check it small. Look at your pfp and server icon at list size before you upload. If you can't tell what it is, simplify it.
- Watch contrast. Discord has light and dark themes. A light letter on a dark circle, or the other way round, reads in both.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Discord banner size?
A Discord server banner is 960 × 540 px with a 16:9 ratio, and needs server boost level 2. A Discord profile banner is 600 × 240 px with a 5:2 ratio, and needs Nitro. They are different images in different places, so make one for each rather than reusing the same file.
What size is a Discord pfp?
A Discord profile picture is 128 × 128 px, square, and Discord shows it as a circle. A larger square such as 512 × 512 px also works and looks sharper on high-resolution screens. Keep the subject centered, because the corners are cut off.
What is the Discord server icon size?
A Discord server icon is 512 × 512 px, square, and Discord accepts images down to 128 × 128 px. It is shown as a small circle in the server list, so bold letters or a single symbol work best. An animated GIF icon needs server boost level 1.
Do I need Nitro for a Discord banner?
You need Nitro for a profile banner; without it you can only pick a banner colour. A server banner does not need Nitro, but the server needs boost level 2, which takes 7 boosts from its members.
What file types does Discord accept for images?
Profile pictures, banners, server icons and emoji accept PNG, JPG and GIF. Stickers accept PNG and APNG. Use PNG when you need a transparent background, such as for emoji, stickers and logos.
Why does my Discord pfp look blurry?
Usually because the original image was smaller than 128 × 128 px, or it was cropped from a small part of a larger photo. Upload a square image of at least 128 px on each side, ideally larger, and crop it before uploading so Discord does not have to zoom in.
