The most common LinkedIn post size is 1080 × 1350 px for a portrait image, 1080 × 1080 px for a square and 1200 × 627 px for a landscape. LinkedIn itself only sets a ratio range (3:1 to 4:5), a 552 × 276 px minimum and a recommended width of 1080 px, so these sizes are common practice rather than official picks.
Below are the post sizes, then the profile photo, banner, Page and article sizes that LinkedIn does publish. This guide is part of the social media image sizes series, which covers every other platform.
LinkedIn post sizes at a glance
The table lists what LinkedIn states and what is common practice. LinkedIn sets only a ratio range, a minimum size and a recommended width for photos, so every exact post size here is a convention that fits inside that range.
| Item | Size | Ratio | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape post image | 1200 × 627 px | 1.91:1 | Common practice (1200 × 627 is LinkedIn's link-preview size for Page posts) |
| Square post image | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Common practice |
| Portrait post image | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Common practice, the tallest ratio LinkedIn allows |
| Minimum photo size | 552 × 276 px | 2:1 | LinkedIn Help |
| Accepted ratio range | 3:1 to 4:5 | wide to tall | LinkedIn Help |
| Document or carousel | PDF, up to 100 MB and 300 pages | any | LinkedIn Help |
| Video | 256 × 144 to 4096 × 2304 px | 1:2.4 to 2.4:1 | LinkedIn Help (Pages) |
LinkedIn's photo sharing help page sets the minimum at 552 × 276 px, recommends a 1080 px width and says the ratio can range from 3:1 to 4:5 (width to height). For Page posts that share a URL, LinkedIn recommends a 1.91:1 custom image of 1200 × 627 px.
Best image size for a LinkedIn post
The best image size for a LinkedIn post is 1080 px wide, with a height that matches the shape you want: 1080 × 1350 px for the most feed space, 1080 × 1080 px for a safe square, or 1200 × 627 px for a landscape. Taller images take more room in the feed.
- Portrait (4:5): quotes, text graphics, people and step-by-step slides. This is as tall as LinkedIn allows.
- Square (1:1): a safe default on desktop and mobile.
- Landscape (1.91:1): screenshots, charts and naturally wide photos.
What is the LinkedIn aspect ratio?
LinkedIn accepts photo ratios from 3:1 (very wide) to 4:5 (tall), per its photo help page. A ratio outside that range is cropped.
What happens to images outside the ratio range?
LinkedIn's help page says that if the ratio is larger than the maximum, the image will be centered and cropped to fit. Resize a tall image such as 9:16 to 4:5 yourself, so you choose what is cut instead of letting LinkedIn crop the middle.
LinkedIn file types and size limits
A LinkedIn image can be JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP or HEIF/HEIC (iOS only), and LinkedIn's help pages give two different limits: 5 MB per uploaded photo and 100 MB per media file. Keep every image under 5 MB to be safe, which also keeps uploads fast.
LinkedIn's supported file types page lists these limits:
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Image file types | GIF, HEIF/HEIC (iOS only), JPEG, PNG, WEBP |
| GIF limit | 500 frames or 36,152,320 pixels |
| File size for any media | 100 MB |
| Upload limit on the photos page | 5 MB |
The photos help page gives the 5 MB upload limit and allows up to 20 images in a multi-photo post. Because the two pages disagree, plan for 5 MB per image.
LinkedIn carousel size
A LinkedIn carousel is a document post, so the limits are on the file, not on each slide: a PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC or DOCX of 100 MB or less and 300 pages or fewer. LinkedIn publishes no slide dimensions, so 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) or 1080 × 1080 px (1:1) is common practice.
LinkedIn's document upload help states the file types and limits. Export the deck as a PDF with every slide the same size. A multi-image post of up to 20 photos is the other option.
LinkedIn video size
LinkedIn's video specs for Pages list a file size of 75 KB to 5 GB, a length of 3 seconds to 10 minutes, a resolution of 256 × 144 to 4096 × 2304 px, an aspect ratio between 1:2.4 and 2.4:1 and a frame rate of 10 to 60 FPS. The current maximum length is 10 minutes.
These numbers come from the video specifications page for Pages, last updated four years ago. It says AVI, QuickTime and MOV files are no longer supported, while the supported file types page lists MOV with a 100 MB limit. For a normal post, an MP4 under 100 MB is the safest choice.

LinkedIn profile photo and background photo size
A LinkedIn profile photo must be between 400 × 400 px and 7680 × 4320 px, and the background photo is recommended at 1584 × 396 px (4:1). Both must be PNG or JPG, and GIFs are not supported. These are LinkedIn's own numbers.
| Image | Size | File rule |
|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 px minimum, 7680 × 4320 px maximum | PNG or JPG, up to 8 MB |
| Background (banner) photo | 1584 × 396 px recommended | PNG or JPG, under 8 MB |
The figures are on LinkedIn's photo upload help page. A square photo is shown as a circle, so keep your face in the middle.
LinkedIn company Page logo and cover size
For a LinkedIn Page, the logo is 400 × 400 px recommended (268 × 268 px minimum) and the cover image is 1512 × 256 px. Every Page image must be PNG or JPEG, up to 3 MB. Do not reuse the 1584 × 396 px personal banner on a Page.
LinkedIn's image specifications for Pages and Career Pages lists:
| Image | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Logo | 268 × 268 px | 400 × 400 px |
| Cover image | 1512 × 256 px | 1512 × 256 px |
The same page lists Life tab images for Pages with Career Pages.
LinkedIn article and newsletter cover image size
The optimal cover image for a LinkedIn article is 1920 × 1080 px (16:9). LinkedIn crops covers to 16:9 and accepts JPEG, JPG, PNG and WEBP, but no longer accepts GIFs as covers. Images inside the article body can also be GIF.
This comes from LinkedIn's help page on adding images and rich media to your article. Animated GIFs inside an article must be under 400 frames. Newsletters use the same editor.
LinkedIn ad image sizes
LinkedIn single image ads use a recommended 1200 × 628 px (1.91:1), 1200 × 1200 px (1:1) or 720 × 900 px (4:5) image in JPG, PNG or GIF, up to 5 MB. LinkedIn recommends the vertical 4:5 format, which serves on mobile only.
| Ratio | Recommended | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal 1.91:1 | 1200 × 628 px | 640 × 360 px |
| Square 1:1 | 1200 × 1200 px | 360 × 360 px |
| Vertical 4:5 | 720 × 900 px | 360 × 640 px |
The table is from LinkedIn's single image ads specifications.
The LinkedIn photo resizer crops a photo to these sizes in your browser, and the character limits guide covers text. SociaHive schedules posts to LinkedIn personal profiles, though not company Pages; see how to schedule LinkedIn posts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1920 × 1080 a good size for a LinkedIn post?
Yes, 1920 × 1080 px works because 16:9 is about 1.78:1, which sits inside LinkedIn's 3:1 to 4:5 range. It will not be cropped. It does show smaller in the feed than a portrait image, so 1080 × 1350 px gets more space if your design allows a taller shape.
Can I post a GIF on LinkedIn?
Yes, GIF is a supported image type for posts, with a limit of 500 frames or 36,152,320 pixels, according to LinkedIn's supported file types page. GIFs are not supported as a profile photo or a background photo, and article covers no longer accept them, though GIFs can sit inside an article body.
How many images can a LinkedIn post have?
A multi-photo post can have up to 20 images, per LinkedIn's photo help page. The layout depends on the first image's shape, and images render at a maximum ratio of 4:5, so a taller image is cropped to fit. Put the most important image first, because the post gives it the most visual emphasis.
What size is the image for a shared link?
For Page posts that share a URL, LinkedIn recommends a custom 1.91:1 image of 1200 × 627 px. LinkedIn builds the preview image from the site being shared, and a post can carry either a link or an image, not both at once.
