The Discord character limit is 2,000 characters per message, or 4,000 with Nitro. Bluesky posts hold 300 characters, Threads posts 500, YouTube titles 100 and Reddit titles 300. The table below puts the limits for every major platform side by side, and each section after it explains what that platform actually counts.

Limits change. Platforms raise them for paying users or for everyone from time to time, so check the field in the app when a number matters. To test your own text against a limit, use a counter built for the platform: the Discord character counter, Bluesky character counter, YouTube character counter, Threads character counter, Reddit character counter or X character counter.

Discord character limit

A Discord message can have up to 2,000 characters on a free account. Nitro raises it to 4,000, according to Discord's own account limits list. Nitro Basic keeps the 2,000 limit, so only full Nitro changes it.

What is the maximum length of a Discord message?

2,000 characters without Nitro and 4,000 with it. Everything you type counts: spaces, line breaks, emoji and the formatting symbols around bold or code. A custom emoji or a mention is stored as text such as <@123456789>, so it can take more room than it looks on screen. Discord has no separate word limit, so "Discord word limit" is the same number counted in characters.

Other Discord limits

  • Usernames: 2 to 32 characters. Your server nickname is capped at 32 too.
  • About Me (bio): 190 characters. See Discord bio ideas for examples that fit.
  • Formatting: the symbols for bold, italics and code count toward the message limit. Discord text formatting shows the full syntax.

How to get past the Discord character limit

You can't raise the limit on a free account, but you have three honest options:

  1. Split the text into two or more messages, ideally at a paragraph break.
  2. Attach the text as a .txt file instead of pasting it.
  3. Subscribe to Nitro for 4,000 characters per message.

Paste your draft into the Discord character counter first to see exactly where it needs to split.

What is the 13 rule on Discord?

It usually refers to Discord's minimum age. You must be at least 13 to have an account (older in some countries), and it has nothing to do with message length.

Why does Discord only allow 10 members?

You are most likely thinking of a group DM, which is a small private chat that holds up to 10 people. Servers have no such cap and can hold far more members.

Bluesky character limit

Bluesky allows 300 characters per post, but it counts graphemes, not raw characters. A grapheme is one visible symbol as a reader sees it. A flag emoji, a family emoji or a letter with an accent each count as one grapheme even though they are built from several underlying code points.

That makes the count friendlier to emoji and non-Latin scripts than a plain length check. A text editor may report 1 for a letter and 7 for a family emoji; Bluesky reports 1 for both.

Display names are limited to 64 graphemes and the profile bio to 256, per the AT Protocol profile schema. Paste a draft into the Bluesky character counter to see the grapheme count. Links in a post take up space as written, so a long URL eats your 300, unless you let the composer turn it into a link card.

Threads character limit

Threads posts are limited to 500 characters, and that covers replies as well as new posts. Meta's Threads API documentation states the 500 limit and adds a detail that surprises people: it says emoji are counted by their UTF-8 byte size, so a single emoji can use more than one character of the budget.

The Threads bio is shared with your Instagram profile, so the 150-character Instagram bio limit applies. Check a draft with the Threads character counter, especially if it has emoji.

YouTube character limits

YouTube's help page for video settings gives these video limits: a title can be up to 100 characters and a description up to 5,000 characters. Neither may contain invalid characters, and the YouTube API specifically forbids the < and > symbols in both.

Character limit for a YouTube title

100 characters. Only part of it shows in search results and suggestions on many screens, so put the keywords and the hook in the first 60 or so characters. The same 100 applies to Shorts titles.

YouTube description character limit

5,000. One technical wrinkle: the YouTube Data API reference measures the description in bytes, not characters. Text in Latin letters uses one byte per character, but emoji and many non-Latin scripts use two to four, so a description written in those can hit the ceiling sooner when it's published through an API or scheduling tool.

Other YouTube limits

  • Comments: up to 10,000 characters.
  • Channel description: up to 1,000 characters.

The YouTube character counter checks titles and descriptions against these numbers.

Reddit character limits

Reddit gives you 300 characters for a post title, 40,000 for the body of a text post and 10,000 for a comment. The title can't be edited after you post it, so count it before you submit. The feed also cuts long titles off, so the first line has to carry the point.

Your profile About text is limited to 200 characters. Markdown symbols count like any other character, which matters in long posts that use headings and lists; the Reddit character counter counts them for you.

Instagram character limits

An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, and Instagram's help center gives 150 characters for the bio. Posts can carry up to 30 hashtags; go over and the caption or comment won't post.

Only the first line or two of a caption show before "more", so lead with the point. Line breaks count as characters; Instagram line breaks covers how to add them in a caption and a bio.

Facebook character limits

Facebook posts can run extremely long, about 63,000 characters, so the limit rarely matters in practice. What matters more is that the feed folds long posts after a few lines. Meta doesn't publish the exact figure on its help pages, which is why it is shown above as "about".

LinkedIn character limits

A LinkedIn post can have up to 3,000 characters and a profile headline up to 220. Both are the figures widely reported by LinkedIn-focused guides rather than an official help page, and the headline limit was raised from 120 to 220 in 2020, so older articles quote it wrongly.

The feed shows only a short opening before "see more", so the first two lines do most of the work. Line breaks and spaces count.

TikTok character limits

TikTok lets you write up to 4,000 characters in a caption in the app. If you publish through TikTok's Content Posting API, which scheduling tools use, the documented limit is 2,200 characters (counted in UTF-16 units). Write to 2,200 if the caption might be posted by a tool.

The bio is about 80 characters, and some accounts report a higher number, so test it in your own settings.

Pinterest character limits

Pin titles allow 100 characters, and Pinterest says the first 40 or so are what shows in feeds. Pin descriptions allow up to 800 characters per Pinterest's pin specs. Some Pinterest pages for ads and bulk upload list 500 for descriptions, so use 500 if you upload in bulk. Descriptions don't appear in the home feed but help Pinterest work out what the Pin is about.

Telegram character limits

Telegram's Bot API allows 1 to 4,096 characters per text message and up to 1,024 for the caption on a photo, video or file. Longer text has to be split into several messages.

Profile bios are 70 characters for regular accounts, and Telegram Premium raises that. A channel or group description can be up to 255 characters. For ideas that fit, see Telegram bio ideas.

X character limit

X posts are 280 characters, but X weights characters, so the count is not a plain length: some characters count as more than one. That makes X different from every platform above, and it has its own guide: the X character limit guide explains the weighting, and the X character counter applies it to your draft.

What counts as a character

Platforms don't all measure text the same way. There are four methods you'll meet:

  • Plain length: every letter, space, line break and symbol counts as one. Discord, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn and Telegram work roughly like this.
  • Graphemes: each symbol as a reader sees it counts as one, whatever it's made of. Bluesky.
  • Bytes: the size of the text in storage, where emoji and non-Latin scripts cost more. YouTube descriptions through the API, and emoji on Threads.
  • Weighted: characters carry different values. X.

If you post the same text on several platforms, write to the strictest limit and trim from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Discord character limit include spaces?

Yes. Spaces, line breaks, emoji and formatting symbols all count toward the 2,000 (or 4,000 with Nitro).

Is the Bluesky character limit 300 or 256?

300 is the limit for a post. 256 is the limit for your profile bio. Both are counted in graphemes.

How long can a YouTube title be?

100 characters. Aim for around 60 so the important words aren't cut off in search and on mobile.

Do emoji count as one character?

It depends on the platform. On Bluesky an emoji is one grapheme. On Threads, Meta's documentation says emoji are counted by byte size, so one can use more than one character of the budget.

Which platform has the longest limit?

Among these, Facebook posts (about 63,000) and Reddit text posts (40,000) allow the most text. Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Telegram sit in the thousands, and Bluesky and Threads are the shortest.

Can I schedule posts that respect each platform's limit?

Yes. SociaHive checks each post against the limit of every platform you schedule it to, for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, Bluesky, LinkedIn and Pinterest, so a caption that fits one doesn't get rejected by another.
