To add a line break in an Instagram caption, press return (or Enter) where you want the new line. A single line break usually stays, but a blank line between paragraphs often disappears, because Instagram removes lines that are empty; to keep it, put an invisible character on the blank line before you post.

The quickest way to do that is to write the caption in an Instagram line break generator, copy the result, and paste it into Instagram. Below is why the spacing disappears, how the invisible character works, and the steps on iPhone, Android and desktop.

Why Instagram removes your spacing

Instagram tidies text before it shows it. Two things get removed:

  • Empty lines. A line with nothing on it is treated as nothing. Two paragraphs with a blank line between them can arrive as two paragraphs with no gap, or run together as one block.
  • Spaces at the end of a line. Trailing spaces are dropped, so you can't use a row of spaces to push text down or across.

Instagram has changed how it handles this more than once, and a caption can look different in the app you wrote it in than on someone else's phone. That is why the advice online contradicts itself: some people say line breaks work fine, others say they vanish. Single line breaks are generally kept. Blank lines are the part that is unreliable.

The fix: an invisible character on every blank line

A blank line survives if it is not really empty. The trick is to put a character on it that displays as nothing.

The character most tools use, including ours, is U+2800, the braille pattern blank. It is a standard Unicode character that shows as an empty space. Instagram sees a line with a character on it and keeps it; your readers see a blank line.

A few things to know about it:

  • It counts as a character. Each blank line adds one character, plus the line break itself. Captions can be up to 2,200 characters and bios 150, so in a bio it matters.
  • It is not a hack that risks your account. It is ordinary text, the same as any letter.
  • Screen readers may notice it. Some skip it, some read it as a blank braille cell. Use it for spacing only, never in place of words.

Some people put a period, a dash or an emoji on the blank line instead. That works too, but the reader sees it. The invisible character gives the clean gap without the dot.

How to add line breaks on iPhone

  1. Open the Instagram line break generator in Safari or any browser.
  2. Type or paste your caption, with an empty line wherever you want a gap between paragraphs.
  3. Tap "Copy formatted caption".
  4. Switch to Instagram and start your post. In the caption field, touch and hold, then tap Paste.
  5. Share the post, then open it once to check the spacing.

How to add line breaks on Android

  1. Open the line break generator in Chrome or another browser.
  2. Write the caption with the blank lines you want.
  3. Tap "Copy formatted caption".
  4. In Instagram, long-press the caption field and tap Paste.
  5. Post, then open the post to check it.

How to add line breaks on desktop

  1. Open the line break generator on your computer.
  2. Write or paste the caption.
  3. Click "Copy formatted caption".
  4. On instagram.com, create a post and paste into the caption box with Cmd+V on a Mac or Ctrl+V on Windows.
  5. Share, then check the caption on your phone too.

On every device, one rule: don't press return in Instagram afterwards to add more blank lines. Lines you add in the app are empty again, and may be removed. If you want to change the spacing, change it in the tool and paste the whole caption again.

Fixing a post that already lost its spacing

Open the post, tap the three dots and choose Edit. Select the caption text and delete it, then paste the formatted version from the tool and save. Retyping it in the app brings the problem back.

Spacing your Instagram bio

The bio field takes line breaks the same way. Go to Edit profile, tap Bio, and press return for a new line. For a blank line between lines, use the invisible character: switch the line break tool to Bio, type the bio, tap "Copy formatted bio" and paste it into the Bio field. The tool then checks the count against the 150-character bio limit.

A layout that reads well in 150 characters:

Handmade ceramics from Lisbon

That is four lines of text and one blank line, which costs only two characters (the invisible character and its line break). More blank lines than that usually push the important part below what people read.

Can you indent a line in your bio?

Not reliably. Spaces at the start of a line may be kept or trimmed depending on the app version. If you want a line to stand out, start it with a short symbol or an emoji instead of spaces.

If you use styled text in your bio, add the line breaks last, after the words are final. Our guide to Instagram bio fonts covers which styles display reliably.

How to space a caption so people read it

Instagram shows the first line or two of a caption and hides the rest behind "more". Spacing can't change that, but it changes what happens after someone taps:

  • Put the hook in the first line. It is the only part everyone sees.
  • One idea per paragraph. Two or three short lines, then a blank line.
  • Give the call to action its own paragraph. "Comment PRICE and we'll send the link" at the end of a dense block is easy to miss; on its own line it isn't.
  • Keep hashtags apart. A blank line before them separates your words from the tags.
  • Don't over-space. A blank line after every sentence makes a caption look longer than it is. Use gaps between ideas, not between lines.

A caption laid out this way:

Our new spring menu starts Monday.
⠀
Three new dishes, all from the farm down the road, and the lemon tart is back.

Comment MENU and we'll DM you the full list with prices.

If you need a first draft to space out, the Instagram caption generator writes one from a short description.

When you schedule Instagram posts with SociaHive, the caption is published with its line breaks as you wrote it, so the spacing you set up is what your followers see.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add a line break in an Instagram caption?

Press return or Enter in the caption field for a new line. For a blank line between paragraphs that stays, put an invisible character on it: write the caption in the Instagram line break generator, copy it and paste it into Instagram.

Why does Instagram remove my spaces?

Instagram removes empty lines and spaces at the end of a line before it shows a caption or bio. A blank line holding an invisible character is not empty, so it stays.

How do I put spaces in my Instagram bio?

Press return in the Bio field for a new line. For a blank line, add the invisible character U+2800 to it; the easiest way is to format the bio in a line break tool and paste the result into Edit profile.

How do I skip a line in an Instagram caption?

Leave an empty line where you want the gap, then format the caption so that line holds an invisible character. Paste the formatted caption into Instagram instead of adding the empty line in the app.

Do line breaks count toward the Instagram character limit?

Yes. Each line break counts as a character, and so does the invisible character on each blank line. Captions can be up to 2,200 characters and bios up to 150.

Is the invisible character safe to use?

Yes. U+2800 is a standard Unicode character, not a workaround Instagram penalizes. Screen readers may skip it or read it as a blank braille cell, so use it only for spacing.
