To schedule a Telegram message, type it, press and hold the Send button, tap "Schedule Message", then pick a date and time. Telegram added this in 2019 and it works in any chat, group or channel you can post in. For a queue of channel posts across several platforms, a scheduler such as SociaHive can post to a Telegram channel through your own bot.
Below are the exact steps for phones and desktop, the "send when online" and repeat options, why a scheduled message sometimes does not go out, and where a scheduler fits.
How do I schedule a message on Telegram?
These steps work in a private chat, a group or a channel where you are allowed to post.
- Open the chat. Go to the person, group or channel you want to message.
- Write the message. Add text, a photo, a video or a file as you normally would.
- Press and hold Send. On iPhone and Android, a long press on the Send button opens a small menu instead of sending.
- Tap Schedule Message. Telegram opens a date and time picker.
- Pick the time and confirm. The message joins that chat's schedule and goes out at the time you chose.
Telegram announced the feature in September 2019: "Hold the 'Send' button in any chat and select 'Schedule Message' to automatically send things at a specified time in the future" (Telegram blog). When the message is sent, you get a notification so a message planned weeks ago does not surprise you.
In Telegram Desktop, right-click the Send button instead of holding it, then choose to schedule the message.
Reminders for yourself. Schedule a message in your Saved Messages chat and it turns into a reminder that pings you at that time. The same Telegram announcement describes this use.
Where do scheduled messages wait?
On Telegram's servers, not on your phone. Telegram's developer documentation describes a "server-side schedule queue" for each chat, and says every private chat, group, supergroup and channel has its own queue (Telegram API: Scheduled messages). In practice that means you can close the app after scheduling.
Two details from the same documentation are useful to know:
- A time less than 10 seconds in the future is sent right away instead of being scheduled.
- Scheduled messages can be edited, sent early or deleted before their time. The queue supports changing the scheduled date, sending queued messages immediately and deleting them without sending.
Send when online
In a private chat with one person, Telegram can hold a message until the other person comes back online. If they are online when you send it, it goes out at once; if not, it waits and is delivered when they return.
There is one catch. If the person hides their last seen time in their privacy settings, Telegram cannot tell when they are online, and the message is neither scheduled nor sent. This option exists only for private chats, not groups or channels (Telegram API: Scheduled messages).
Can you schedule a repeating message on Telegram?
Yes, with Telegram Premium. Premium users can make a scheduled message repeat. The allowed intervals are every day, every week, every two weeks, every month, every three months, twice a year and every year. A repeat works for a single message, not for an album of several photos or videos (Telegram API: Scheduled messages).
Without Premium, schedule each message separately, or use a bot or scheduler for recurring channel posts.
Why are my scheduled Telegram messages not sending?
Most failures come from one of these:
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| It sent at once | The time was less than 10 seconds away | Pick a later time |
| A "send when online" message never left | The person hides their last seen time | Schedule a normal time instead |
| Nothing arrived in a group or channel | You lost permission to post there | Ask an admin to check your rights |
| It arrived at the wrong hour | You set it in a different time zone in your head | Check the time on the picker before you confirm |
| It is still in the queue | The time has not come yet | Open the chat's scheduled messages to check |
If the time has passed and the message is still in the queue, open the app again on a working connection and check that chat's scheduled list. You can send it right away from there.
Why are my Telegram messages delayed?
Telegram does not publish a list of causes. On your side, a message cannot leave your device until it reaches Telegram, so a slow or blocked connection holds it back. Scheduled messages wait on Telegram's servers, so once one is queued it does not depend on your phone being online at the scheduled time.
How to schedule Telegram channel posts with SociaHive
Telegram's own scheduler is fine for a few messages. If you run a channel next to Instagram, LinkedIn or other accounts, a scheduler keeps every post in one calendar. SociaHive posts to Telegram channels only. It does not send messages in personal chats or groups, so use Telegram's own scheduling for those.
How it works:
- Your own bot posts. You create a bot with @BotFather, paste its token into SociaHive, and add the bot to your channel as an admin with permission to post. SociaHive checks that right before it posts.
- You pick the channel. Enter the channel's public username, such as
@yourchannel, or its numeric id. - Text and media. A text post can be up to 4,096 characters. With a photo or video, the caption limit is 1,024. You can add up to 10 photos or videos, sent as an album.
- Two post options. "Send silently" delivers the post without a sound, and "Protect content" stops members from forwarding or saving it.
- No stats. Telegram does not give bots view counts for posts, so SociaHive shows no Telegram analytics.
The character limits come from Telegram's Bot API, which caps a message at 4,096 characters and a caption at 1,024. To check length and style first, see Telegram text formatting and the Telegram post generator.
Scheduling a Telegram channel is part of SociaHive's free plan, which covers 30 scheduled posts a month. Telegram bot automations, such as replying to messages people send your bot, are on the Pro plan and up. See pricing and Telegram automation for the details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone see if a message was scheduled?
Telegram's documentation describes a flag that tells the sender a scheduled message was sent. It does not describe any marker shown to the person who receives it. The message appears in their chat at the time it was sent.
How do I send a scheduled message on Telegram?
Write the message, press and hold Send, choose Schedule Message and pick a time. On desktop, right-click Send. The message waits on Telegram's servers and goes out at that time, and you get a notification when it does.
Can I edit or cancel a scheduled Telegram message?
Yes. Open the chat's list of scheduled messages. From there you can change the time, send a message right away or delete it before it goes out.
Does my phone need to be on for a scheduled message to send?
No. Telegram keeps scheduled messages in a queue on its servers, so they go out at the set time even if your phone is off.
Can I schedule messages in a Telegram group?
Yes, with Telegram's own Schedule Message option, as long as you can post in the group. SociaHive does not post to groups; it schedules posts to channels.
How many characters can a Telegram channel post have?
Up to 4,096 characters for a text post and 1,024 for the caption on a photo, video or file, according to the Bot API. Longer text has to be split into several posts.
