Pick one and watch it get built

Use Threads if you want reach and already have an Instagram or Facebook audience. Use Bluesky if you want a smaller, more open network with custom feeds and a more text-first crowd.

Both are text-first alternatives to X. Threads is Meta's app. Bluesky is an independent company on an open protocol.

Bluesky vs Threads at a glance

Threads has over 400 million monthly users, roughly ten times Bluesky's registered accounts. The table lines up the practical differences.

How big is each audience?

Adam Mosseri said in August 2025 that Threads had passed 400 million monthly active users, as TechCrunch reported. CNBC reported in June 2026 that Bluesky had 43 million users as of March, about a tenth of X's estimated global users.

These are different measures: monthly active users count people who showed up, while Bluesky's figure counts accounts. CNBC also cited a former Bluesky engineering lead's count of active daily posters falling from 1.4 million in late 2024 to about 600,000.

Who owns them and why it matters

Threads is hosted and moderated by Meta, and your profile connects to the Instagram or Facebook account you logged in with. The EFF noted in 2024 that Meta's reputation on privacy and moderation had led many Mastodon servers to vow to cut Threads off.

Bluesky is built by a for-profit company, Bluesky PBLLC, on the open AT Protocol, so others can build apps, feeds and moderation tools on the same network. In CNBC's June 2026 interview, Bluesky's COO said the company does not aim to copy Threads or X and sees its future in community spaces, taking inspiration from Reddit. Its video features, she said, still need to catch up.

Post limits and media

Threads allows 500 characters per post and counts emoji by their UTF-8 byte size, so one emoji can use several characters, per Meta's Threads API documentation. That page also says a post may have up to five links, and a carousel can hold 2 to 20 images or videos. Meta's launch post says posts can include videos up to 5 minutes long.

Bluesky posts are limited to 300 graphemes, so an emoji counts as one, and carry up to four images. Check drafts in the Bluesky character counter or the Threads character counter, and see the character limits guide for other networks.

Do Bluesky and Threads work together?

Not directly. Threads can share public posts with the fediverse (ActivityPub servers such as Mastodon) if you turn on fediverse sharing, which Meta describes as a beta limited to some areas and to adult, public profiles. Bluesky uses a different protocol, so the two cannot follow each other without a bridge. For how Mastodon and Bluesky differ, see Mastodon vs Bluesky.

In practice, using both means posting twice. Write for Bluesky's 300-grapheme limit and the same text fits on Threads.

Which should you use?

Start with Threads if your audience is already on Instagram or Facebook, you want broad reach, or you post photos and short video. Sign-up uses an account you already have.

Start with Bluesky if you want custom feeds, a text-focused network, or an account that is not tied to Meta. If you want both, SociaHive schedules to Bluesky and Threads from one place, and its free plan covers 30 scheduled posts a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Bluesky better than Twitter?

It is not better for everyone, but people choose it for specific reasons: custom feeds, moderation tools you control, and an open protocol. The cost is reach, since Bluesky has about a tenth of X's estimated users, per CNBC. Judge it by whether your audience is there.

Can I use Bluesky and Threads at the same time?

Yes, and many people do. The accounts are separate, so you post to each. Keep posts under 300 graphemes to fit both, because Bluesky's limit is shorter. A scheduling tool that supports both networks saves you posting twice by hand.

Does Threads need an Instagram account?

Not necessarily. Meta's help center says a Threads profile can be created from an Instagram account or a Facebook account, and the profile stays connected to the account you logged in with. Bluesky has its own sign-up and needs neither.

Is Threads open like Mastodon?

Only partly. Threads is hosted by Meta, but adults with public profiles can turn on fediverse sharing, so people on Mastodon and other ActivityPub servers can find and follow them. Meta describes this as a beta available in certain areas, so it is not open to everyone.

Which is better for brands?

Threads for reach and overlap with an Instagram following, Bluesky for engaged, text-first niches. Pick by where your audience already spends time. If you have no audience on either yet, test one for a month and compare replies, not follower counts.
