A good Reddit banner size is about 1920 × 384 px (5:1) for both a profile and a community. Reddit crops banners to the width of the screen, so keep anything important in the middle. Avatars and community icons are square, shown as circles, and work best at 256 × 256 px or larger.
Reddit does not publish one fixed spec for every image, and the numbers have changed over the years. The table below gives the sizes that work reliably today. Treat them as safe targets rather than hard rules.
Reddit image sizes at a glance
| Image | Safe size | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile banner | 1920 × 384 px | 5:1 | Cropped to screen width, avatar overlaps it |
| Community banner (desktop) | 1920 × 384 px, at least 1072 × 128 px | about 5:1 | Edges are cropped first |
| Community banner (mobile) | at least 1080 × 128 px | about 8:1 | Can be set separately from desktop |
| Profile avatar | 256 × 256 px or larger | 1:1 | Shown as a circle |
| Community icon | 256 × 256 px or larger (300 × 300 px is common) | 1:1 | Shown as a circle |
| Post image | 1200 × 628 px for link previews, 1080 × 1350 px for tall posts | varies | Taller than 4:5 gets cropped in the feed |
If you only have one picture and need it cut to these sizes, the Reddit photo resizer crops it to the banner, avatar, icon and post sizes in your browser without uploading it anywhere.
Reddit profile banner size
Use 1920 × 384 px (5:1) for a profile banner. That is wide enough to stay sharp on large monitors and short enough that Reddit does not cut off much on a laptop.
Reddit scales the banner to fit the page width and then crops the top and bottom, so a very tall picture loses a lot. Your avatar also sits on top of the banner, on the left on desktop and near the bottom centre on mobile. Put logos, text and faces in the centre and keep the corners as background.
Profile banners are a separate image from your community banners. You set it in your profile settings, and it is only seen on your own profile page.
Reddit community banner size on desktop and mobile
A community (subreddit) banner is the wide image at the top of a community page. Moderators set it in the community's appearance settings. Reddit lists minimums of about 1072 × 128 px for desktop and 1080 × 128 px for mobile, so a banner smaller than that looks stretched or soft. Aim well above the minimum, around 1920 × 384 px.
Desktop and mobile are cropped differently:
- Desktop: the banner is shown wide, and on a narrower window the left and right edges are cut first.
- Mobile: the banner is shorter and cropped more tightly, so text near the edges disappears.
- Separate uploads: the mobile banner can be uploaded on its own if you want a different crop.
A safe layout is a banner with a plain background, your logo or title in the middle third, and nothing important in the outer fifth on each side. Check the result on a phone before you finish.
Reddit avatar and community icon size
The avatar and the community icon are both square images that Reddit displays as circles. Upload at least 256 × 256 px. A larger square such as 512 × 512 px stays sharper on high-resolution screens, and Reddit scales it down.
Because the corners are cut off, leave about 15% of padding around the subject. A face or a logo in the exact middle survives the circle crop; a wide logo does not.
Community icons follow the same rule. Most communities use a simple symbol or one or two letters, because the icon is shown very small next to post titles.

Reddit post image size
Reddit does not force a single post image size, but the feed crops tall pictures. These sizes display cleanly:
- Link preview image: 1200 × 628 px (about 1.91:1). This is the image Reddit shows when you post a link.
- Portrait photo: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5). Anything taller than this is cut off in the feed, and people have to tap to see the full image.
- Square photo: 1080 × 1080 px.
- Landscape photo: 1920 × 1080 px (16:9).
Image galleries work best when every picture has the same ratio, because the others can be cropped to match the first. For help with the posting side, such as titles and flair, see how to post on Reddit.
What is the file size limit for Reddit?
Reddit's help pages do not give one number for every image, and some figures online conflict. In practice, keep avatars, icons and banners under about 500 KB to 5 MB and use JPG or PNG. If an upload fails, resize the picture or export it at a lower quality and try again.
Post images accept larger files, but smaller loads faster. Keep photos under a few MB.
How to change your Reddit banner
- Open Reddit and go to your profile.
- Choose the option to edit your profile or customise it.
- Select the banner area and upload your image.
- Adjust the crop if Reddit offers it, then save.
For a community banner, a moderator opens the community's settings, goes to the appearance or styling section, and uploads the banner there. The exact menu names change as Reddit updates its design, so look for "Banner" or "Appearance".
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a Reddit banner?
Use 1920 × 384 px (5:1) for both profile and community banners. Reddit lists minimums of about 1072 × 128 px for a desktop community banner and 1080 × 128 px for mobile, but larger images look better.
Why is my Reddit banner cropped?
Reddit scales the banner to the screen width and crops what does not fit, mostly at the edges and at the top or bottom. Your avatar also covers part of a profile banner. Keep key content in the centre and use a plain background.
What is the recommended banner size for Discord in 2026?
Discord uses different sizes: 600 × 240 px for a profile banner and 960 × 540 px for a server banner. See the full list in Discord image sizes.
What size is a Reddit profile picture?
At least 256 × 256 px, square. Reddit shows it as a circle, so keep the subject centred with some padding around it.
What is a good size for a Reddit community icon?
Use a square image of 256 × 256 px or larger, such as 300 × 300 px. Keep the design simple, since it is shown at a very small size.
Is 728 × 90 a mobile ad size?
No. 728 × 90 px is the leaderboard banner for desktop web ads. Mobile banner ads use 320 × 50 px or 300 × 250 px instead, and none of these apply to Reddit profile or community banners.
