Pick one and watch it get built

To create a post on Reddit, open the community you want to post in, tap or click Create (on desktop) or the + button (in the app), choose a post type, write a title, add your text, image or link, pick any flair the community requires, and press Post. You need an account, and some communities also ask for a minimum account age or karma.

Getting the post published is the easy part. Getting it to stay up, and to get replies, depends on the community's rules and on how you write the title and body. This guide covers the steps on every device, the rules that cause removals, and templates you can copy. To build a draft quickly, try the Reddit post generator.

How to create a post on Reddit on desktop

The buttons move around when Reddit updates its design, so look for the labels rather than the positions.

  1. Log in at reddit.com.
  2. Go to the community (subreddit) you want to post in. Posting from inside the community is the safest way to pick the right one.
  3. Click Create (or Create Post) in the top bar.
  4. Choose the community from the dropdown if it is not already selected.
  5. Pick a post type: Text, Images & Video, Link or Poll.
  6. Write the title. Reddit allows up to 300 characters.
  7. Add the body, files or link.
  8. Click Add flair if the community offers it, and add the tags it requires (such as spoiler or NSFW) only when they apply.
  9. Click Post.

If you want your own profile as the destination instead of a community, choose your profile (it appears as u/yourname) in the community dropdown. Profile posts do not appear in any community feed, so they get far fewer views.

How to create a post on the Reddit app (iPhone and Android)

The steps are the same on iOS and Android.

  1. Open the app and go to the community, or stay on Home.
  2. Tap the + (Create) button.
  3. Pick the community if you are not already in it.
  4. Choose the post type and write the title.
  5. Add the text, photos, video or link.
  6. Tap Add tags and flair (the label varies slightly by version) and pick the flair the rules ask for.
  7. Tap Post.

On mobile web (the browser version), the flow follows the desktop steps. If you cannot find Create, you are most likely on a screen that is not inside a community or Home; go back one level.

Reddit post types, and when to use each

TypeBest forNotes
TextQuestions, discussions, stories, adviceSupports formatting. Most communities favour this for discussion.
Images & VideoPhotos, art, clips, screenshotsSome communities ban screenshots or require context in a comment.
LinkArticles, videos, resourcesThe title is the headline. Many communities restrict links from your own sites.
PollQuick votesNot every community allows polls.

Not every community allows every type. If a type is greyed out or missing, the moderators have turned it off. Reddit also offers crossposting (sharing an existing post into another community), but check that the other community permits it.

How to pick the right subreddit

Search for the topic in the search bar and compare a few communities before choosing. Look at three things in each:

  • Size and activity. A huge community means more eyes but faster burial and stricter rules. A small one means fewer views but often better replies.
  • Rules. On desktop, the rules sit in the sidebar. In the app, open the community and tap About or the rules section. Read them in full before writing a word.
  • Recent top posts. Sort by Top for the month and see which titles, formats and lengths survive. That is the community telling you what it wants.

Post in one community at a time. Posting the same text in many communities within minutes looks like spam and can get you removed by moderators or filtered by Reddit.

Read the rules, flair and requirements before you post

Each community sets its own rules, and moderators enforce them. The most common ones are:

  • Flair. Many communities require you to tag your post (for example Question, Discussion, Showcase). A post without required flair is often removed automatically.
  • Minimum karma or account age. Karma is the score you earn from upvotes. Reddit does not publish one universal number. Each community can set its own limits through its automatic moderation tool (AutoMod), and those limits are usually not listed in the sidebar. If a post vanishes right after you submit it on a new account, this is a likely cause.
  • No self-promotion, or limited self-promotion. Reddit's long-standing community guideline is that most of what you share should not promote yourself, often summed up as the 9:1 rule (about nine contributions that are not promotion for each one that is). It is a guideline rather than a Reddit-wide law, and a community can be stricter, so read its self-promotion rule.
  • Title rules. Some require a format such as [Question] at the start, or ban clickbait and all caps.
  • No repeats. Search first. Moderators remove questions already answered in the FAQ or the last few days.

What gets a Reddit post removed

  • Missing or wrong flair
  • Breaking a listed rule (self-promotion, off-topic, low-effort)
  • Account too new or too low in karma for that community
  • Links to banned sites, or too many links
  • Reposting the same thing, or posting the same text across many communities
  • Asking for votes, or sharing personal information about someone else

If your post is removed, you will often not get a message. Check your profile: a post that shows up there but not in the community was probably filtered. Message the moderators politely (use the modmail option in the sidebar) and ask what to fix. Do not repost the same thing straight away.

Why can't I create a post on Reddit?

If the Post button is greyed out, or you get an error, check these in order:

  1. The community's post-type settings. The type you chose may be switched off.
  2. Required flair or tags. The button stays disabled until the community's required flair is picked.
  3. Account limits. A new account, or one with low karma, may be blocked from that community.
  4. A ban or mute. If you were banned from the community, you cannot post there.
  5. A restricted community. Some communities only let approved users post.
  6. Posting too fast. Reddit slows down accounts that post repeatedly in a short time.
  7. An email or verification step. Make sure your account is signed in and verified through Reddit's prompts.

Start with the rules and flair, since they are the cause most of the time.

How to post on Reddit for the first time

Spend a day or two commenting before you post. Helpful comments earn karma, show you the community's tone, and make you look like a member rather than a visitor. Then post something that fits the community's top posts, in the format they use. A first post that asks a clear question, with the details a stranger needs to answer, tends to do best.

Reddit post templates

Copy these and replace the brackets. Always check the community's rules first, because some communities require a specific title format.

Make the post easy to read

A wall of text gets skipped. Use short paragraphs, a list for steps, and bold for the one or two key words. Reddit's formatting works in markdown, and our guide to Reddit text formatting shows the syntax. For a styled look in titles, where markdown does not work, you can paste characters from the Reddit bold text generator, but use it sparingly because some readers and search tools handle those characters poorly.

If you want to practise a layout before posting, the Reddit post generator gives you a draft you can edit. SociaHive does not post to Reddit; it schedules posts to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, Bluesky, LinkedIn and Pinterest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a new post on the Reddit app?

Open the app, go to the community you want, tap the + (Create) button, choose the post type, write the title and body, add any required flair, and tap Post. The labels can differ a little between app versions, but the order of steps stays the same.

Where is the create post button on Reddit?

On desktop it is labelled Create (or Create Post) in the top bar. In the app it is the + button at the bottom of the screen. If you cannot see it, go to a community page or Home and look again.

What is the 9:1 rule on Reddit?

It is an older community guideline that about nine of your contributions should be something other than self-promotion for every one that promotes you. It is not enforced by Reddit itself, and many communities set their own, stricter self-promotion rules, so always read the community rules.

How many karma do I need to post on Reddit?

There is no single number. Each community can set its own minimum through AutoMod, and most do not list it. Large communities tend to ask for more than small ones. Commenting helpfully for a few days is the usual way to build enough.

Why was my Reddit post removed?

The usual reasons are missing flair, breaking a community rule, a new account or low karma for that community, or a link the community does not allow. Check whether the post still shows on your profile, then message the moderators through modmail to ask what to change.

Can I edit a Reddit post after posting?

You can edit the body of a text post, but not the title. If the title has a mistake, you will usually need to delete the post and submit it again after checking it is allowed.
