Pick one and watch it get built
Pick Instagram if you sell something people can see and want to build a following you control. Pick Reddit if your customers ask questions in communities and you can answer them without selling.
Most small businesses should start with one. Instagram rewards steady posting of your own work. Reddit punishes anything that looks like advertising and rewards people who help.
Reddit vs Instagram for business at a glance
The two platforms work in opposite ways. Instagram shows your posts to followers and to people its recommendations pick. Reddit shows posts to members of a community, and the community's moderators decide what stays.
| Who sees your post | Followers, plus strangers through recommendations | Members of the community you post in |
| What you own | A profile and a follower list | Nothing; you borrow other people's communities |
| Self-promotion | Expected from a business account | Restricted by community rules and Reddit's spam policy |
| Best content | Photos, carousels, Reels, Stories | Honest answers, discussions, case write-ups |
| Ads | Boost a Reel or run ads | Self-serve Reddit Ads |
| Ongoing effort | Content production | Reading and replying |
Audience size and how people use each platform
Instagram is the bigger audience. Mark Zuckerberg announced in September 2025 that Instagram had passed 3 billion monthly users, and Adam Mosseri said almost all of the recent growth came from DMs, Reels and recommendations. People open Instagram to look at things and follow people they like.
Reddit's advertising page claims 514M+ weekly visitors and more than 100,000 active communities. The more useful point is how people use it: they go to a community to ask something specific, such as which tool to buy or how to fix a problem. A business that shows up with a good answer meets a buyer at the moment of asking.
Self-promotion rules: the biggest difference
Instagram expects you to promote. Reddit does not, and that is the difference to plan around. Reddit's platform rule says to participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest and not to spam.
Reddit's spam policy names mass-posting repetitive content for exposure or financial gain as a violation. It also says that if your contributions are mostly links to a business you run, you should be thoughtful about how often you post or consider advertising. Moderators decide what counts as spam in their own community, so a post that is fine in one subreddit gets removed in the next.
Reddit's older Reddiquette page gives a rule of thumb: only 1 out of every 10 submissions should be your own content. Moderators can still remove a post that follows it. Read each community's rules before you post anything, and see how to post on Reddit for the mechanics.
What works on each platform
On Instagram, the content that grows a business account is your own product and process shown clearly: finished work, before and afters, how it is made, customers using it. Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, so keep Reels short if you want strangers to find them. Our Instagram marketing strategy guide covers the plan in detail.
On Reddit, three things work for a business:
- Answering questions in your field. Search the community for questions you could answer well, and answer fully without linking to yourself.
- Showing real numbers or lessons. A write-up of what you learned running your shop gives readers something; a product announcement mostly asks them for something, and is the kind of post moderators tend to remove.
- Listening. Reading a community for a month tells you the exact words customers use for their problems, which you can reuse in your Instagram captions and product pages.

Ads: Instagram boosts vs Reddit Ads
Both platforms sell ads, and ads are the one way to promote openly on Reddit. Instagram lets you boost a Reel you already published. Reddit points businesses that mainly share links to their own company towards its self-serve ads platform, and it also offers Reddit Pro, a set of tools for taking part in the platform organically or alongside ads.
For a first test, boosting something you already made is simpler. Reddit Ads make more sense once you know which communities your customers read.
Effort: what each platform asks of you
Instagram asks you to make content on a schedule. The work is production: photos, video, captions, replying to comments and DMs. If you sell products, a professional account adds insights, a contact button and the ability to run ads.
Reddit asks you to read and reply. There is little to produce, but it cannot be batched, because each reply depends on a live conversation.
If you take the Instagram route and get comments like "price?" or "link?", you can answer them automatically with a DM so the follow-up does not depend on you being online.
How to choose
Use these questions in order:
- Is your product visual or easy to show in a photo or short video? If yes, start with Instagram.
- Do your customers ask for recommendations or troubleshooting help in online communities? If yes, start with Reddit.
- Do you want an audience you keep if you leave? Choose Instagram. A follower list is yours, a subreddit is not.
- Do you have more time to write than to produce video? Reddit suits writers; Instagram suits makers.
Many businesses end up on both: Reddit to learn what customers ask, Instagram to publish the answers. To get ideas for what to post, try the Instagram content ideas generator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I turn my Instagram into a business account?
Yes, if you promote a business or products. Instagram says a professional account, either Business or Creator, adds insights, a contact button and ad tools to your profile, and you can switch back to a personal account at any time. If you only post for friends, there is no need.
Can I advertise on Reddit instead of posting?
Yes, and Reddit suggests it. Its spam policy says that if your contributions are mostly links to a business you run, you should be thoughtful about how often you post or consider its self-serve advertising platform. Ads are paid, so you are not relying on a community's goodwill.
Does Reddit have a business account like Instagram?
Reddit has Reddit Pro. Reddit describes it as tools for deciding where, when and how to take part, whether alongside Reddit Ads or as organic engagement alone. Nothing in it overrides community rules, and moderators still decide what is allowed in each subreddit.
Is Reddit or Instagram better for a local business?
Instagram is usually the easier start for a local business, because a profile with photos and a contact button gives nearby customers one place to look. Reddit can still work if your town has a community where residents ask for recommendations, but you will be a guest there. Our guide to social media marketing for local businesses covers Google Business Profile and Facebook as well.
Can I link to my Instagram from Reddit?
Only where the community's rules allow it. Reddit's spam policy asks you to be thoughtful when most of your posts are links to something you own, and says moderators decide what counts as unwanted in their community. Check the subreddit rules, or ask the moderators, before sharing a profile link.
