Best Time to Post on Reddit (and How to Find Yours)

The best time to post on Reddit depends on the subreddit. See what three guides claim, how Hot ranking treats post age, and how to find your slot.

There is no single best time to post on Reddit, because every subreddit has its own audience and its own clock. Weekday mornings in US Eastern time (about 6 to 9 a.m.) is the common starting guess, and the way to find your real slot is to check the subreddit's own top posts. The three guides that rank for this question all point to that window, but none names the dataset behind its numbers.

A new post mostly needs early votes, and the method below shows how to see when your subreddit's readers are around to give them.

What is the best time to post on Reddit?

Weekday mornings in US Eastern time, roughly 6 to 9 a.m., is where the guides overlap. Treat that as a place to start testing, not as proof, because none of them publishes its data.

SourceWhat it recommendsData behind it
OctolensMonday 6 to 8 a.m. EST, then Monday and Tuesday 9 to 11 a.m.; avoid weekends"Historical engagement data for B2B content", no dataset named
PostizWeekdays 8 a.m. to noon EST; weekend mornings 10 a.m. to noonNo dataset named for the general windows
PostponeWeekdays 6 to 9 a.m. ET, Monday to Thursday busiestSays its tool analyzes hundreds to thousands of recent posts in the subreddit you enter

Octolens says its Monday 6 to 8 a.m. slot catches early US readers and the European afternoon. That is a reason for the window, not evidence of it, so test it on your subreddit.

Best time to post on Reddit by subreddit

The best hour changes with who reads the subreddit. Octolens lists times for developer and business subreddits, and Postiz gives a few examples for others. These come from the guides and are not verified data.

The pattern is the useful part: work-related subreddits peak in US business hours, hobby and entertainment ones in evenings and on weekends.

Why post age matters on Reddit

Reddit's Hot ranking adds a recency bonus to a score based on votes, and the vote part grows logarithmically. In the last Hot code Reddit published, 12.5 hours of age is worth a tenfold difference in net votes.

The formula is in Reddit's archived open-source code: the score is the base-10 log of net votes plus the post's age in seconds divided by 45,000 (12.5 hours). Two things follow:

  • A post with 100 net votes from 12.5 hours ago ranks about the same as a post with 10 net votes posted now.
  • The first 10 votes count as much as the next 90, so early votes matter more than any later push.

This is old public code. Reddit's feeds today use more signals and the home feed is personalized, so read it as the logic behind why fresh posts get a head start, not as today's exact formula.

How to find the best time to post in your subreddit

To find the best time for one subreddit, look at when its successful posts went up, check when it is busiest, and test two slots. Each step uses only what the subreddit shows you.

  1. Open the subreddit and sort by Top, then set the range to the past month.
  2. Write down the day and hour each of the ten top posts went up, in your own time zone.
  3. Open the New tab at the hours you would post and note how fast new posts arrive.
  4. Pick two slots that match step 2 and have a calmer New tab.
  5. Post in those slots on different days with the same kind of post, so time is the only thing that changes.

For a ready-made version, Postpone's analysis tool shows a heatmap of engagement by hour for the subreddit you enter, in your local time zone. Searching and heatmaps are free; the full per-weekday breakdown is on a paid plan.

When posting at the right time still does not work

If a post gets no votes at any hour, the cause is usually not the clock.

  • The rules. Read the subreddit sidebar. Many communities remove self-promotion or set limits for new accounts, and a removed post gets no votes at any time of day.
  • The title. Say plainly what the post answers or shows. See how to post on Reddit for the full process and Reddit text formatting for the post body.

For other networks, the best time to post on social media guide goes through them one by one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to post on Reddit on Saturdays?

Postiz suggests 10 a.m. to noon EST on weekends and says weekend mornings suit hobbies, DIY and long-form stories. Octolens advises avoiding weekends for business topics but lists hobby communities such as r/selfhosted, which it puts at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST. Choose by topic: weekends fit hobbies better than work subjects.

Is it worth posting at 3 or 4 a.m. to avoid competition?

Only if your audience is awake. Postiz says 3 to 4 a.m. EST on Wednesdays often shows the lowest competition, but the ranking rewards early votes, and few people vote at that hour in US time zones. It might suit a subreddit with many European or Asian members. Check its New tab at that hour first.

Which time zone should I use when I plan a Reddit post?

Use your audience's time zone, not yours. US-focused subreddits follow Eastern or Pacific time, and international ones are spread out. The guides above quote Eastern time, so convert before you plan. Postpone's tool shows results in your local time zone, which removes the conversion.

Should I post when the subreddit is busiest or quietest?

Busiest hours bring more voters but also more new posts competing with yours. For a small post, a calmer window with an active audience can work better. Compare both on your subreddit by checking how fast the New tab moves in each slot, then test one busy and one quiet time.
