Best Reddit Usernames: 120 Cool Ideas You Can Use

The best Reddit usernames are short, easy to say aloud, and not tied to your real name, age or workplace. Pick one that fits how you will use Reddit for years, because a Reddit username is permanent once you finish sign-up. Below are 120 original ideas in groups, then the rules and a way to choose.

Reddit usernames can't be changed, so choose carefully

Reddit does not offer a "rename my account" button. If you signed up with an auto-generated name, Reddit has shown a short window to keep it or pick another, but once the name is final it stays. The only way to get a different name is a new account, which means starting over with no karma, posts or comments.

So treat the name like a tattoo, not a haircut. If you are unsure, take a day before you confirm it. Reddit also lets you set a separate display name on your profile, which is the part you can edit later, so a plain username with a friendlier display name is a safe combination.

Reddit username rules

Reddit usernames are generally 3 to 20 characters and use letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens, with no spaces. Reddit does not publish every detail in one clear place and guides online disagree on the upper limit, so check the length hint on the sign-up form before you type a long name. Names are unique, so two people can't share one.

Capital letters show as you type them, but you can't change the capitalisation later either, so decide whether QuietLantern or quiet_lantern looks better first. Also avoid anything that breaks a subreddit's rules or impersonates a brand or person; accounts can be removed for that.

You can test whether a name fits the length and character rules with the Reddit name generator, which also builds new combinations from your own words.

How to choose a Reddit username

Answering "how do I choose a Reddit username" comes down to five checks:

1. Keep it private. Leave out your full name, birth year, school, employer and city. Reddit is public and searchable.
2. Say it out loud. If you can't read it to a friend in one go, it is too complicated.
3. Think five years ahead. Will you still like it if you move from gaming to cooking to career advice? Broad names last longer than niche jokes.
4. Avoid dates and numbers that age. Sam2024 looks old quickly. A number is fine if it has no meaning.
5. Check it is free. Search reddit.com/user/yourname and see if it loads a profile.

If you want help getting started, the Reddit name generator mixes themes and styles, and the Discord name generator works the same way when you want a matching name for chat.

Quick formulas that work

Most good names follow a pattern. Try these:

• Adjective + animal: CalmHeron, BrightBadger
• Object + place: LanternHarbor, BiscuitBridge
• Hobby + first name: KnitwithNia (use a made-up name, not yours)
• Verb + noun: ChasingKites, CollectingMoss
• Two odd nouns: TeacupVolcano

Once you have a short list, say each aloud, check availability, and sleep on it. If you also post elsewhere, our guides on posting on Reddit and Reddit text formatting help you settle in after you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rarest Reddit usernames?

The rarest usernames are very short ones (three or four characters) and single common words, and almost all are already taken. A longer name made from two unrelated words is far more likely to be free and still feels unique.

What are edgy usernames?

Edgy usernames use dark or moody images, such as shadows, static, ash or night. Keep them atmospheric rather than offensive so you aren't reported or hard to take seriously in a discussion.

Can I change my Reddit username later?

In general, no. A finished username is permanent, including its capitalisation. Reddit has offered a one-time chance to swap an auto-generated name soon after sign-up, so if you see a prompt, use it. Otherwise your choices are a new account or changing your display name.

What should I avoid in a Reddit username?

Avoid your real name, anything tied to your location or job, slurs, other people's names, and brand names. Also avoid a name you would be embarrassed by in ten years.

Are Reddit usernames case sensitive?

Reddit shows your name with the capital letters you chose. Reddit doesn't clearly document whether a name that differs only by capitals counts as taken, so treat any spelling of a taken name as taken and pick something clearly your own.
