Choose once: Reddit names are permanent

On Instagram, TikTok or X you can rename yourself in settings. On Reddit you can't. Your username stays the same for the life of the account, and your karma, post history and standing in communities stay attached to it.

So take your time. Generate a list, say the favourites out loud, picture them under a serious comment and a joke, and only then sign up.

Anonymity and your Reddit name

A lot of Reddit is people asking questions they wouldn't ask under their real name. If that might be you, keep your name, employer and town out of your username, and don't reuse the handle you use on Instagram or X, which would let someone connect the two accounts.

The keyword field doesn't have to be your name. A hobby, a favourite object or two random words ("tin_lantern") make a username that is yours without pointing to you.

Reading the rules in the results

Every idea here is 3 to 20 characters and uses only letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. Periods are not allowed on Reddit, so where the Instagram version of this tool writes "kettle.club", this one writes "kettle_club" or "kettle-club".

The 20-character limit is tight once two words are joined, so combinations that would run over are left out rather than cut short.

Questions

Can I change my Reddit username?

No. A Reddit username can't be changed once the account exists; the only way to get a new one is to make a new account. That is why it is worth a few minutes with a generator before you sign up.

What should my Reddit username be?

Something you won't mind being called in every comment for years, and that doesn't give away more about you than you want. Many people keep their real name out of it so they can post freely about work, health or money.

What makes a good Reddit username?

Good Reddit usernames are short, easy to read in a thread and say something about you without naming you. Reddit allows 3 to 20 characters with letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens, so two words joined by an underscore ("quiet_kettle") fit well.

How do I check if a Reddit username is taken?

Open reddit.com/user/ followed by the name: if a profile loads, it is taken. Reddit's signup form is the final check. Each idea above links to its profile address.

What is the difference between a Reddit username and a display name?

The username is permanent and appears as u/name next to your posts and comments. Your profile can also have a display name, which you can change, but most people see the username first.

Why does Reddit suggest random usernames?

Reddit's signup offers random names so you can start quickly. You don't have to take one, and since you can't change it later, it is worth choosing your own.
