Pick one and watch it get built
Use 9:16 vertical video for Facebook Reels and Stories, and 4:5 or 1:1 for Feed ads. Reels can be any length. Facebook shows video from 16:9 to 9:16 on most surfaces, so the ratio you pick decides how much of the screen you fill.
Meta publishes exact pixel sizes mostly for ads, so the table says which numbers are ad specs. For photos and other networks, see social media image sizes.
Facebook video size by placement
The best Facebook video size is 9:16 for Reels and Stories, 4:5 or 1:1 for Feed, and 16:9 for in-stream video. Meta's aspect ratio guidance gives those recommendations for ads, and its video requirements chart says surfaces support ratios from 16:9 to 9:16.
| Placement | Ratio | What Meta publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | 4:5 (1:1 also supported) | Feed ads: 1440 x 1800 pixels, MP4, MOV or GIF |
| Reels | 9:16 | Portrait 9:16, landscape 16:9 or square 1:1 can be uploaded; 1080p recommended |
| Stories | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 recommended, 540 x 960 minimum (Page Stories API) |
| In-stream | 16:9 | Ads run 5 seconds to 10 minutes on mobile |
The Feed pixel size comes from the Meta Ads Guide for Feed video, and the Stories size from Meta's Page Stories API documentation. Meta gives no separate pixel size for organic Feed videos, so use the ad numbers as a target.
Facebook Reels video size
Facebook Reels work best as 9:16 vertical video at 1080p. Since June 2025 every video posted to Facebook is shared as a reel, and Meta says reels can be any length or orientation, with no minimum or maximum length.
The Reels creative tools page lists three orientations: portrait 9:16, landscape 16:9 and square 1:1. Clips sit in a fixed 9:16 container, so a horizontal video is cropped or letterboxed.
Meta's Reels best practices name four things that make a reel less discoverable: blurry low-resolution video, visible watermarks from other apps, a border around the video, and horizontal framing. Facebook overlays the caption and buttons on a reel, so keep key text and faces inside the safe area; the Reels safe zone checker shows where it is.
Facebook Feed video size
For Feed ads, shoot 4:5 vertical or 1:1 square. Meta's aspect ratio guidance says both are supported for images and videos in Feed placements. A 4:5 video uses more of a phone screen than a square one.
On the computer version of Feed, Meta says ad video is shown in a 1:1 frame, which can put black bars on either side of a vertical or wide video. If most of your audience is on desktop, square is the safer choice.
Facebook Stories video size
Facebook Stories should be 9:16, 1080 x 1920 pixels. Meta's video requirements chart lists Stories as accepting 1.91:1 to 9:16 and, for ads, 1 to 120 seconds, but a full-screen vertical file avoids any crop.
Instagram Stories use the same 9:16 shape. If you post the same vertical video to Instagram Reels, our Instagram Reel size guide covers that side.

Facebook video length and file size
Reels have no length limit. For ads, the length depends on the placement, and the largest file Meta allows is 4 GB, per its video ad upload troubleshooting page.
| Ad placement | Length |
|---|---|
| Feed and Marketplace | up to 241 minutes |
| In-stream (mobile) | 5 seconds to 10 minutes |
| In-stream (desktop) | 5 to 15 seconds |
| Stories | 1 to 120 seconds |
Those lengths are from Meta's video length specifications.
Best export settings for Facebook video
Export reels as MP4 with H.264 video and stereo AAC audio. Meta's Reels requirements recommend:
- Use .mp4 at 1080p.
- Use H.264 or H.265 video.
- Use a frame rate from 24 to 60 fps.
- Use stereo AAC audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 128 kbps or higher.
- Use progressive scan, square pixels and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
For ads, Meta warns that small files look pixelated and that videos should be at least 600 pixels wide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ratio is 1920 x 1080?
1920 x 1080 is 16:9, the standard landscape HD ratio. Divide both numbers by 120 to get 16 and 9. On Facebook it suits in-stream video, but as a reel it fills only a strip of the 9:16 screen, so the rest is padded or cropped.
Can I post a 16:9 video on Facebook?
Yes. Meta says surfaces support ratios from 16:9 to 9:16, and every video you post is shared as a reel. Landscape works, but on a phone it appears small inside the vertical reel frame. If you can, reshoot or crop it to 9:16 to fill the screen.
Why does my Facebook video look blurry?
Low resolution, a small file or the wrong ratio for the placement are the usual causes. For ads, Meta says the most common reason videos render badly is size, and asks for a minimum width of 600 pixels. Export at 1080p and match the placement's ratio.
Can I post a square video to Facebook Reels?
Yes, square 1:1 is one of three orientations Reels accept, along with 9:16 and 16:9. Meta still recommends vertical video for Reels, because square and horizontal videos leave empty space on a phone and are not as easy for others to recreate.
