Shoot and export vertical video at 1080 × 1920 px, a 9:16 ratio. It fills a phone screen on Instagram Reels and Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, Snapchat and Pinterest, so one 9:16 master can go to all of them.
Each platform's help page sets slightly different limits, listed below. For photos, see our social media image sizes guide.
Vertical video dimensions by platform
Vertical video is 9:16 on every major platform, and 1080 × 1920 px is the size to export. The official numbers differ in minimums, length and file size. Several platforms publish pixel sizes only for ads, so the TikTok, Stories and Pinterest rows below are ad specs.
| Platform | Ratio the platform names | Limits it publishes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels | 1.91:1 to 9:16 | 720 px minimum, 30 FPS minimum | Instagram Help |
| Instagram Stories ads | 9:16 recommended | 1080 × 1920 recommended, 600 × 1067 minimum | Meta Business Help |
| TikTok ads | 9:16 recommended | 540 × 960 minimum, up to 10 minutes, 500 MB | TikTok Business Help |
| YouTube Shorts | Square or vertical | Up to 3 minutes | YouTube Help |
| Facebook Reels | Any orientation | 1080p recommended, 24 to 60 FPS | Meta Business Help |
| Snapchat | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 canvas, 3 seconds to 30 minutes, 1 GB | Snapchat Business Help |
| 2:3, 4:5 or 9:16 recommended | Idea ads: 1080 × 1920, up to 5 minutes | Pinterest Business Help |
Instagram Reels and Stories vertical size
Instagram accepts Reels with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, at a minimum of 720 pixels and 30 frames per second, according to its Reel size page. So 9:16 is the tallest ratio it takes.
For Stories, Meta's ad spec recommends 1080 × 1920 with a 600 × 1067 minimum, and also accepts any feed ratio from 1.91:1 to 4:5. Full Reels specs, including cover size, are in our Instagram reel size guide.
TikTok video dimensions
For in-feed ads, TikTok recommends vertical 9:16 at 540 × 960 px or more, up to 10 minutes and 500 MB, in its video ad specifications. It lists horizontal 16:9 (960 × 540 minimum) and square 1:1 (640 × 640 minimum) as accepted alternatives.
Export at 1080 × 1920 so the picture stays sharp on large screens. TikTok says its safe zone depends on the ad's dimensions, caption length and format, and offers downloadable safe-zone files for each.
YouTube Shorts size
YouTube classifies a video as a Short when it has a square or vertical aspect ratio and runs up to three minutes, for uploads from October 15, 2024. Export at 1080 × 1920.
YouTube also warns against baking in black bars: it says padding stops the player adapting to the viewer's device. Crop to 9:16 instead of placing a horizontal video in the middle of a vertical frame.
Facebook vertical video size
Facebook publishes no required pixel size for vertical video: all videos posted since September 2025 are shared as reels, of any length or orientation. For reels it recommends 1080p, H.264 or H.265, 24 to 60 FPS, with stereo AAC audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz.
Use 1080 × 1920 for a full-screen reel. For the older feed sizes and file limits, see Facebook video size. To keep a copy of a video you posted, see how to download Facebook videos.

Snapchat and Pinterest vertical video
Snapchat's single image or video ad spec uses a full-screen canvas of 1080 × 1920 px at 9:16, MP4 or MOV with H.264, 1 GB or less, from 3 seconds to 30 minutes.
Pinterest recommends square or vertical video (2:3, 4:5 or 9:16) for standard video ads, and 1080 × 1920 px at 9:16 for full-bleed Idea ads, which can run up to 5 minutes. See Pinterest image sizes for still pins.
Safe zones for vertical video
Interface buttons, captions and the username cover the edges of a full-screen vertical video, so keep faces and text away from the top, bottom and right edges. Only Pinterest publishes exact margins: for Idea ads, it asks you to keep text 270 px from the top, 65 px from the left, 195 px from the right and 440 px from the bottom.
Pinterest's margins leave a central area of 820 × 1210 px on a 1080 × 1920 frame (1080 − 65 − 195 by 1920 − 270 − 440). Other apps publish no margins, so check a draft in the Reels safe zone checker before you post.
Export settings that work across platforms
Export 9:16 MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio at 30 fps and 48 kHz. That meets Instagram's 30 FPS minimum, Facebook's 24 to 60 FPS and 44.1 or 48 kHz recommendation, and Snapchat's H.264 requirement.
Instagram also lists a few technical details on its Reel size page: progressive scan, High profile, closed GOP, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and stereo audio at 48 kHz or 96 kHz.
Common 9:16 sizes, calculated from the ratio, are in this table.
| Width × height | Name |
|---|---|
| 540 × 960 | Lowest size TikTok accepts for ads |
| 720 × 1280 | HD |
| 1080 × 1350 | 4:5, the tallest feed ratio Meta lists |
| 1080 × 1920 | Full HD, the usual export |
| 1440 × 2560 | 2K |
| 2160 × 3840 | 4K |
To fit a photo or an existing clip to these sizes, the social media image resizer crops to the right ratio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is vertical video always 9:16?
No. 9:16 is the full-screen vertical ratio, but 4:5 and 2:3 are vertical too. Pinterest recommends 2:3, 4:5 or 9:16, and Meta's Stories ad spec accepts feed ratios from 1.91:1 to 4:5. Those show smaller on a phone than 9:16, which fills the screen.
How large is a 1920 × 1080 video?
A 1920 × 1080 video has 2,073,600 pixels, about 2.1 megapixels, the same count as a 1080 × 1920 vertical video turned sideways. Its file size depends on bitrate and length, not on resolution alone, so a 10-second clip at that size can be far smaller than a 10-minute one.
Is a 4:3 aspect ratio vertical?
No, 4:3 is horizontal, wider than it is tall, so it is a landscape ratio. Its vertical twin is 3:4, which works out to 1080 × 1440 px at 1080 wide. For a phone-first video, use 9:16, which is taller still and fills the screen.
Are YouTube videos 16:9 or 4:3?
On a computer, YouTube's standard is 16:9, per its help page, and the player adapts automatically to other ratios. A vertical 9:16 video may get padding on computer browsers, white by default and dark gray in Dark theme. Shorts use a square or vertical frame, up to three minutes.
How do I turn a horizontal video into a vertical one?
Set your editor's canvas to 1080 × 1920, then crop and reposition the footage so the subject fills the frame, following the subject if it moves. If the subject is wide, such as a group shot, re-shoot it vertically instead.
