The best Pinterest photo size is 1000 × 1500 px, a vertical 2:3 image. A square pin is 1000 × 1000 px, a profile cover must be at least 800 × 450 px, and a profile photo is a square that Pinterest shows as a circle. The table below lists every size, and what is official and what is only common practice.

ImageSizeRatio
Standard pin1000 × 1500 px2:3
Square pin1000 × 1000 px1:1
Long pintaller than 1000 × 1500 pxtaller than 2:3
Profile picture400 × 400 px or more1:1, shown as a circle
Profile cover800 × 450 px minimum16:9
Board cover600 × 600 px or more1:1, cropped wide
Video pin1080 × 1920 px9:16 (also 2:3, 4:5, 1:1)

Pinterest recommends 1000 × 1500 px for standard pins (PNG or JPEG, up to 20 MB on desktop). Only the pin, cover minimum and video specs are published by Pinterest; the profile picture and board cover sizes are common practice.

Pinterest pin size: why 2:3

Pinterest is a vertical feed, so tall images take up more room and get noticed. Pinterest's own specs page recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio, which is 1000 × 1500 px, in PNG or JPEG. The file limit is 20 MB when you upload on desktop and 32 MB in the app.

Pinterest also says that "pins with an aspect ratio greater than 2:3 might get cut off in people's feeds." That is the reason to stay at 2:3. A taller image is not wasted, but the part below the cut can be hidden until someone opens the pin, and that part is often where a headline or a call to action sits.

Colors matter a little too: Pinterest asks for PNG files in sRGB and converts uploads to 8-bit RGB JPEG, so a file with a custom color profile can look slightly different after upload.

Square pins

A square pin at 1000 × 1000 px (1:1) is fine for a product photo, a quote or a graphic that reads well in a square. It takes less vertical space than a 2:3 pin, so in a feed full of tall pins it looks smaller. Use it when your content is square by nature, not as a default.

Long pins

Long pins are taller than 2:3, for example 1000 × 2100 px or more, used for step lists and infographics. Pinterest's help page does not name a cutoff, only that a pin taller than 2:3 may be cut off. Guides online give different numbers for where the cut happens, so treat none of them as exact. If you make a long pin, put the title and the main subject in the top 2:3 portion and check how it looks in the feed before you rely on the lower part.

Pinterest profile photo size

Pinterest's help pages do not state a profile photo size, so the common recommendation is a square image of at least 400 × 400 px. The picture is shown as a circle, at a small size on your profile (third-party guides report about 165 px), so a larger file stays sharp on high-resolution screens.

Whatever the size, keep your face or logo in the center, because the corners of the square are cropped by the circle. Pinterest is search-driven and people often find your profile from a pin, so a clear, recognizable image helps. If you also need profile pictures for other apps, see the YouTube image size guide and the TikTok image size guide.

Pinterest profile pic size for a business logo

A logo on a plain background works best. Export it as a square at 600 × 600 px or larger, with a margin of roughly 10 percent on every side, and test the circle crop before you upload.

Pinterest cover size

A profile cover is the wide image at the top of a business profile. Pinterest's help page says it must be at least 800 × 450 px, and recommends a horizontal image at 16:9. Many guides suggest 1600 × 900 px, the same ratio at double the pixels, so the image stays sharp on large screens.

You upload it from your profile: click the plus icon, add the image, drag to crop, and press Done. Because the crop frame changes with screen size, keep the subject and any text well inside the middle of the image, away from the edges.

Pinterest board cover size

A board cover is not a separate upload. It is one of the pins already saved to that board, which you choose as the cover and crop. Pinterest does not publish a size for it, but square covers of 600 × 600 px or larger are the usual advice, and 1000 × 1000 px gives you more room to crop.

On a profile, board covers are shown cropped to a smaller, wider shape, so the top and bottom of a tall pin are trimmed. Choose a pin whose subject sits near the center, or save a square graphic to the board just to use as its cover.

Video pin size

Pinterest accepts MP4, MOV and M4V video files with H.264 or H.265 encoding, up to 2 GB, from 4 seconds to 15 minutes. Pinterest recommends 6 to 15 seconds for ads. Recommended aspect ratios are 1:1, 2:3, 4:5 or 9:16, and a video can be no narrower than 1:2 and no wider than 1.91:1.

For a full-screen vertical video, 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) is Pinterest's recommended size for Idea ads. For a cover frame inside a video pin, use the same 2:3 shape as a standard pin so that the preview matches your other pins. These video numbers come from Pinterest's product specs page, which is written for ads, so organic video pins can differ slightly.

How to resize a photo for Pinterest

  1. Choose the format from the table: a 2:3 pin for most photos, a square for graphics.
  2. Open the Pinterest photo resizer and upload your image.
  3. Pick the pin, profile or cover preset so the crop matches.
  4. Check the crop: a horizontal photo is cut from the center to a tall shape, so a vertical original keeps much more of the picture.
  5. Download the file and upload it as a pin or in your profile settings.

A tall design with the title in the upper half, a clear image below it and your logo at the bottom usually works well. If you plan pins ahead, SociaHive can schedule them to Pinterest along with your other platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Pinterest photo size?

1000 × 1500 px at 2:3. That is the size Pinterest recommends for a standard pin, and it shows the full image in the feed without being cut off.

What size is a Pinterest profile picture?

Pinterest does not publish an exact size, so upload a square of at least 400 × 400 px. It is displayed as a circle, so keep the subject in the center.

What is the Pinterest cover size?

At least 800 × 450 px at 16:9, according to Pinterest's help page. Business accounts can add a cover. Upload 1600 × 900 px for a sharper image.

What size is a Pinterest board cover?

There is no set size. The cover is one of the pins on the board, cropped to a wide shape. Choose a pin, ideally a square one of 600 × 600 px or more, with the subject in the middle.

Can a Pinterest pin be longer than 2:3?

Yes, but Pinterest warns that a pin taller than 2:3 might be cut off in the feed. Keep the key content in the top part of a long pin.

What file types does Pinterest accept for pins?

PNG and JPEG for images, up to 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in the app. Videos can be MP4, MOV or M4V, up to 2 GB.
