The best TikTok profile picture size is a square of 200 × 200 px or larger. 200 × 200 is the usual working minimum, and 400 × 400 px or more stays sharp on high-resolution screens. TikTok shows it as a circle. For photo posts and video covers, use 1080 × 1920 px (9:16).

Below is every TikTok image size in one table, then the details for each: how the circle crop works, which ratios photo posts accept, and how to fit a picture that is the wrong shape.

TikTok does not publish a complete size table, so these are the sizes that work well in practice rather than official limits. The TikTok photo resizer crops one picture to the profile, photo post and cover sizes in your browser.

TikTok profile picture size

Use a square image of at least 200 × 200 px. Some guides quote a smaller technical minimum of about 20 × 20 px, but at that size the picture is a blur. Upload 400 × 400 px or larger so it stays crisp when someone opens your profile on a big phone.

TikTok shows your profile picture (pfp) as a circle, so the corners of your square are cut off. Keep your face or logo in the centre with space around it. A tight head-and-shoulders crop works better than a full-body photo, because the picture is also shown very small next to your comments.

  • File types: JPG or PNG are the safe choices.
  • Photo or video: TikTok also lets you use a short video as your profile picture.
  • How to change it: open your profile, tap Edit profile, then tap Change photo and pick or take a picture.

How to fit a profile pic on TikTok

If the picture gets cut off, the cause is almost always the circle crop. Fix it in three steps:

  1. Crop the image to a square first, with the subject in the middle.
  2. Leave about 15% padding around the subject so the circle does not clip it.
  3. Upload it and use the crop step to drag the picture until it sits inside the circle.

If your picture is wide, add background on the sides instead of stretching it. The same trick works when you reuse a logo from another network.

How to view a TikTok profile picture in full size

TikTok shows a small version, and the app itself has no button for a full-size download. The simplest options are to tap the picture on a profile to see a larger view, or to ask the person for the original. A picture you uploaded will never be larger than the file you used, so keep the original on your phone or computer.

TikTok photo post and carousel size

Photo posts, also called photo mode or carousels, are swipeable slides with sound. The ratio that fills the whole screen is 9:16, which is 1080 × 1920 px.

Is TikTok 9:16 or 4:5?

Both appear, but they behave differently. 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px) fills the screen and is what TikTok is designed for. 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px) and 1:1 (1080 × 1080 px) are accepted as well, but they are shown smaller with empty bars above and below. If you want your photo to look full, use 9:16.

A few practical rules for carousels:

  • Use the same ratio for every slide. Mixed ratios are letterboxed or cropped, and the result looks uneven.
  • Photos from an Instagram carousel are usually 4:5, so they will have bars on TikTok. Re-crop them to 9:16.
  • Slide counts have changed over time, so check the in-app limit when you upload.
  • Keep text away from the edges. The caption, username and buttons cover the bottom and right side.

If you are moving a set of pictures from Instagram, how to resize an image for Instagram covers the 4:5 and 1:1 sizes you are starting from.

TikTok video cover size

The cover (thumbnail) is the still image shown on your profile grid. Use 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) so it matches the video. On your profile the grid shows a taller crop of it, so keep titles and faces in the middle.

You can choose a frame from the video when you post, or upload your own image. A custom cover with a short, large title tends to read better in the grid than a random frame. Keep text out of the bottom edge, where the view count sits.

TikTok photo size, ratio and safe zones

On a phone TikTok puts several things over your content: the caption and username at the bottom left, the like, comment and share buttons on the right, and the top bar. Keep text and faces inside a central area, about 150 px from the top, 250 px from the bottom and 120 px from the sides on a 1080 × 1920 px canvas. These margins are a rule of thumb, since the exact overlay changes with the device and the app version.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should my TikTok profile pic be?

A clear, square picture, at least 200 × 200 px, with your face or logo centred. Pick something that still reads when shown as a tiny circle. Use the same picture across your other accounts so people recognise you.

What is the TikTok photo size ratio?

9:16 (1080 × 1920 px) fills the screen. 4:5 and 1:1 also work, but they are shown smaller with bars around them.

What size is a TikTok pfp in cm or inches?

Pixels are what matter, not physical units, because a profile picture is shown on screens rather than printed. A 400 × 400 px file is fine. If a tool asks for centimetres, it just converts pixels using a resolution setting, and the result on TikTok is the same.

Why is my TikTok profile picture blurry?

The image is probably too small or was compressed twice. Upload a square file of at least 400 × 400 px and avoid re-saving it as a low-quality JPG.

Can I use a GIF as a TikTok profile picture?

TikTok's profile photo is a still image, so a GIF will not animate there. Upload a JPG or PNG instead.
