The Slack profile picture size is at least 512 × 512 px and no larger than 1024 × 1024 px. That is the range on Slack's help page, and it is the only pixel size Slack publishes for profile photos.

Slack gives no pixel size for the workspace icon or custom emoji, only file rules, so those rows below say what Slack states and nothing more.

Slack profile picture size at a glance

ImageWhat Slack saysSource
Profile photoMinimum 512 × 512 px, no larger than 1024 × 1024 pxUpload a profile photo
Workspace iconGIF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, HEIC or HEIF; you crop it on upload; no pixel size givenUpload a Slack icon
Custom emojiSquare images under 128 KB with transparent backgrounds work best; JPG, PNG or GIF; GIFs up to 50 framesAdd custom emoji

A square export at 512 × 512 px is a sensible choice for a profile photo: it meets the minimum and stays well under the maximum. That is advice, not a Slack rule.

How to upload a Slack profile picture

On desktop, open your profile, click Edit and upload the photo under Profile photo. These are Slack's steps for desktop.

  1. Click your profile picture in the sidebar.
  2. Select Profile from the menu.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Under Profile photo, click Upload Photo.
  5. Select a photo.
  6. Adjust the framing, then click Save.
  7. Click Save Changes.

On iOS and Android, tap your profile picture at the top of the screen, then View profile, Edit Profile and Edit Photo. Take or choose a photo, then tap Save (on iOS you can crop first and tap Choose).

To remove a photo, Slack says to use the desktop app or a browser, because the mobile apps cannot do it yet. Click Edit on your profile, select Remove Photo, confirm, then click Save Changes.

Why your Slack profile picture looks cropped or soft

A photo is cut to fit when it is not square, because Slack asks you to adjust the framing after you pick it. Crop to a square yourself first, with your face or logo centred, and use Slack's framing step only for small changes. The Slack photo resizer crops and exports a 512 × 512 px square in your browser.

A photo below 512 × 512 px is under Slack's stated minimum, so start from a larger original instead of enlarging a small one.

If you never upload a photo, Slack shows a default picture, with one exception covered in the questions below.

Slack workspace icon size

The workspace icon identifies your workspace in the desktop and mobile apps, and workspace owners, admins and org owners can change it on all plans. Slack gives no pixel size, so a square logo exported at 512 × 512 px is a reasonable choice. Again, that is advice.

  1. Click Admin in the sidebar of the desktop app.
  2. Select Edit workspace, then click Workspace icon.
  3. Choose a file and click Upload Icon.
  4. Crop the icon.
  5. Click Crop Icon to save.

On Enterprise plans, workspace owners click the workspace name, choose Tools & settings, then Customize and the Workspace Icon tab. Org owners set the organization icon separately under Organization settings. No logo yet? The Slack workspace icon maker builds one from letters or an emoji.

For sizes elsewhere, see social media image sizes, and for emoji see Slack emoji size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good profile picture for Slack?

Slack says a clear photo makes it easier for someone to pick you out in a crowd or a meeting. A close, well-lit shot of your face works for a person, and a logo suits a team or tool account. Your picture sits next to every message, so avoid fine detail.

Can I remove my Slack profile photo?

Yes, but only on the desktop app or in a browser, since the mobile apps do not support it. Click Edit on your profile, choose Remove Photo below the picture, confirm with Yes, Remove Photo, then click Save Changes. If a Gravatar is tied to your email, uploading a new photo is how you change it.

Why did my Slack photo change by itself?

If your Slack email address matches the email on a Gravatar account, Slack uses that Gravatar as your profile picture. Upload a new photo in Slack to replace it. Slack states this in the same help article that gives the size range.

Why can't I change my Slack workspace icon?

Only workspace owners, admins and org owners can change it. On an Enterprise organization, workspace owners change the workspace icon, and org owners change the organization icon in Organization settings. If you are a regular member, ask an admin to upload it.
