Slack's formatting covers most needs

For everyday emphasis, use Slack's own formatting: the toolbar in the message box, or the shortcuts *bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~ and `code`. That formatting is searchable and read correctly by screen readers.

Unicode styles are for the rest: a small caps heading in an announcement, a script word in a celebration message, or a styled status. They paste in like normal text and look the same to everyone.

Names and statuses at work

A display name or status is seen by everyone you work with. A styled status, such as a small caps "Out of office", is easy to spot in a busy sidebar.

Display names are different: colleagues need to type your name to mention you, and Slack search matches plain letters. If your workspace has naming rules, follow them, and keep at least your first name plain.

Questions

What font does Slack use?

Slack uses Lato for messages and most of the app. Everyone in a workspace sees messages in that typeface, and there is no option to send a message in a different one.

Can I change the font in Slack?

Not the typeface. Slack's formatting toolbar gives you bold, italic, strikethrough, code, quotes and lists, and you can type *bold*, _italic_ and ~strikethrough~ directly. For other looks, such as small caps or script, paste Unicode text from this page.

Where can I use styled text in Slack?

In messages, your status, your display name and channel topics. Use it lightly in names: teammates need to find and @mention you, and styled letters are not matched by Slack search.

Do Unicode fonts work for everyone in a Slack workspace?

Mostly. Bold, italic and monospace styles render on nearly every device. Rarer styles such as squared letters may show as boxes on some computers, so test with a teammate before using them in an announcement.

Is styled text accessible in Slack?

Less than normal text. Screen readers read styled letters as separate symbols, so keep important announcements in plain text and use Slack's own bold for emphasis.
