1080 × 1350 px (4:5). Use 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) if you want the full profile-grid tile. Instagram's help center accepts photos with a ratio from 1.91:1 (landscape) to 3:4 (portrait) and uploads them at up to 1080 pixels wide. Anything outside that range is cropped.
This guide covers every supported ratio and what happens on the profile grid. It is part of our social media image sizes guide. For video, see Instagram reel size. To put a feed post in your Story, see how to share a post to your Instagram Story.
Instagram post size cheat sheet
Instagram publishes a supported range, not a list of official sizes. The range is 1.91:1 to 3:4, which is a width of 1080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels, per Instagram's image resolution page. The common sizes below all sit inside it.
| Shape | Size in pixels | Ratio | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | The widest ratio Instagram supports |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Common practice, inside the range |
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Common practice, inside the range |
| Tallest portrait | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | The tallest ratio Instagram supports |
| Carousel slides | Same as above | Same as above | One shape for the whole post |
| Stories | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Common practice, no size on Instagram's help pages |
Pick portrait for a single photo or carousel that should fill the feed, square when the picture is balanced, and landscape only for genuinely wide images such as a panorama.
Is 1080 × 1350 4:5 or 3:4?
1080 × 1350 is 4:5. Divide 1080 by 1350 and you get 0.8, which is 4:5, the shape Instagram has long used for portrait photos. A 3:4 image at the same width is 1080 × 1440, because 1080 divided by 1440 is 0.75.
The two shapes are close but not the same: 3:4 is 90 pixels taller at 1080 wide. Both are accepted under Instagram's supported range.
How the 3:4 profile grid crops your posts
Since January 2025 the profile grid shows taller tiles instead of squares, which Adam Mosseri announced at the time. Each tile is a center crop and the full post still shows in the feed. Instagram's help center gives no tile size and most guides measure 3:4, so treat the crop as reported, not as an Instagram rule.
| Post shape | Size | What a 3:4 grid tile shows |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | The whole image |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | The image minus a thin strip on each side |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | A narrower center slice |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | Only the middle of the image |
As a calculation, not an Instagram figure: a 3:4 tile at 1350 px tall is 1012.5 px wide (1350 × 3 ÷ 4), so a 1080 × 1350 post loses about 34 px on each side. Keep faces, text and logos in the center, and check a design with the Instagram post preview tool before posting.

Instagram carousel size
A carousel uses the same size rules as a single photo: a ratio from 1.91:1 to 3:4 and a width up to 1080 pixels. Instagram says the orientation you choose applies to every item in the post, per its help page on multi-photo posts, so you cannot mix shapes.
Design every slide at the same size, for example 1080 × 1350, and keep key content in the middle so the first slide also works on the grid. SociaHive schedules Instagram feed posts including carousels, but not Stories or Reels; see how to post on Instagram from desktop.
How to get landscape and portrait on Instagram
Pick the shape in the crop step, or crop the image to the ratio you want before you upload, for example with the Instagram photo resizer; a ratio outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped by Instagram. Our guide to resizing images for Instagram has the steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the aspect ratio for Instagram Stories?
Stories are 9:16, and 1080 × 1920 pixels is the size most creators use. Instagram's help pages do not list a Story size, so this is common practice. Instagram works in pixels, not inches. Inches only appear when you set a resolution in a design tool, and the 9:16 ratio stays the same. The posting steps are in how to post a Story on Instagram, and if yours looks soft, see why an Instagram Story looks blurry.
Can I stretch an image to fit an Instagram post?
Stretching distorts the picture, so crop it instead. If a photo is outside Instagram's 1.91:1 to 3:4 range, Instagram crops it to fit a supported ratio. Cropping the image yourself first, or adding margin around it to reach 4:5, lets you decide what stays in the frame.
What resolution should an Instagram photo be?
Upload at least 1080 pixels wide. Instagram says a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide is kept at its original size if the ratio is supported, photos narrower than 320 pixels are enlarged to 320, and wider photos are sized down to 1080. A 4000-pixel upload gains nothing, and the image compressor shrinks files.
How many photos can an Instagram carousel have?
A carousel can have up to 20 photos and videos in one post, according to Instagram's help center. The orientation you choose applies to all items. Older guides say 10, so check the limit in your app if it matters to your plan.
