First, the cut-off: only about 125 characters show before "…more", so any hook or offer below that line is invisible to most scrollers. Second, the crop: a 4:5 portrait keeps far more vertical space than a square, and faces or text near the edge get clipped. Third, line breaks — walls of text lose readers, and Instagram sometimes collapses spacing that looked fine in your notes app. Fourth, hashtag placement: 30 tags dumped mid-caption push your CTA out of view.
Portrait vs Square: Why 4:5 Usually Wins
Instagram supports 1:1 (1080 × 1080) and 4:5 portrait (1080 × 1350) in the feed. Portrait occupies noticeably more screen on a phone, which means more time in view as someone scrolls — a small, free advantage that compounds across every post.
