QR Code Generator
Create custom QR codes for Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, and more.
Static vs Dynamic QR Codes
A static QR code stores your destination inside the pattern itself. A dynamic one stores a short link owned by the generator, which then redirects — which is how most "free" tools eventually charge you, because if that redirect service lapses, every code you have printed goes dead.
This generator makes static codes. You can never edit the destination after generating, but nothing can break it either, nothing is tracked, and nothing expires. For a link that will not change — your Instagram handle, your WhatsApp number, your site — static is the safer choice, particularly on anything printed.
QR Codes That Open a Chat, Not a Website
Most QR codes point at a homepage, which is a weak destination: the scanner lands on a page and has to work out what to do next. A chat link removes that step by opening a message thread with the keyboard up.
The presets above build these for you. Instagram uses ig.me/m/yourusername to open a DM. WhatsApp uses wa.me with your number in international format, and can carry a pre-filled message. Messenger uses m.me. Printed on packaging, a table card or a receipt, a chat QR turns an offline moment into a conversation you can actually reply to — and if that conversation is going to arrive at 11pm, an automated first reply is what stops it going cold.
Colour and Contrast Rules That Keep Codes Scannable
You can recolour the code above, but scanners are less forgiving than they look. Keep the foreground substantially darker than the background — a dark code on a light background is what every scanner is tuned for. Inverting that (light code, dark background) fails on many older cameras.
Avoid low-contrast pairings such as mid-grey on white or two similar brand colours, and never place a code over a photograph or a gradient. Leave the quiet zone — the blank margin — intact on all four sides; cropping tight to the pattern is the second most common cause of a code that will not read. Test the final printed code with two different phones before committing to a print run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a QR code that opens Instagram DMs?
Yes! Our tool includes an Instagram DM preset that generates a QR code linking to ig.me/m/yourusername. When scanned, it opens a direct message conversation with your account.
Are the QR codes free to use commercially?
Yes. All QR codes generated are free for personal and commercial use, with no attribution required. Download as a PNG and use it on business cards, packaging, flyers, slides, or anywhere digital.
Is there a totally free QR code generator?
This one. There is no account, no watermark, no scan limit and no expiry date, and the codes are free for commercial use. The catch with many "free" generators is that they hand you a dynamic code that routes through their domain and stops working when a trial ends — the codes here are static, so nothing sits between the scanner and your link.
Do these QR codes expire?
No. Every code here is static, meaning your destination is encoded directly into the pattern. Nothing is stored on our servers and there is no redirect to break, so a code printed today still works in ten years. The trade-off is that a static code cannot be edited after printing — if the destination changes, you generate and print a new code.
Can I generate a QR code for my Instagram?
Yes, and you can choose what it opens. The Instagram DM preset generates a code pointing at ig.me/m/yourusername, which opens a message thread with you rather than just your profile — far more useful on packaging or a business card, because a scan becomes a conversation instead of a follow.
What size should I print a QR code?
The working rule is that the code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance: about 2cm square for something held in the hand, 3-4cm on packaging, and much larger for posters read from across a room. Keep a clear margin of empty space around all four sides, and keep strong contrast between the foreground and background colours — very light codes on white are the most common reason a code will not scan.
