An Instagram story looks blurry when the file you upload is already soft, when it is cropped or stretched to fit, or when Instagram's upload quality setting is off. Turn that setting on, upload the original photo or video cropped to 9:16, and never post a screenshot or a copy that went through a chat app.

The table below matches each symptom to its fix.

Why is my Instagram story blurry?

A blurry story almost always traces back to one of six causes. Each leaves a different clue, so match the symptom before you change anything.

How to tell which cause you have

Send the file to a friend before you post it. If it looks soft on their phone, the source file is the problem and no Instagram setting will help. If it looks sharp for them and soft in your story, the problem is the upload.

Online Tech Tips suggests the same check: send the photo to a friend or post it elsewhere. If it looks fine there, the cause is on the Instagram side.

Turn on Upload at highest quality

Instagram has a setting that always uploads at the highest quality, at the cost of a slower upload. Instagram documents it on its Reels size page: tap your profile picture, tap Menu, tap Media quality, then turn on Upload at highest quality.

That page describes the setting for reels. It is a media-quality switch for your account, so it is the first thing to try for stories as well; post a test story to your Close Friends list to compare.

Online Tech Tips also lists turning off the data-saving option as a fix. It names the setting Use less mobile data, and reports that the high-quality upload switch sits beside it on its version of the app.

Instagram story size that stays sharp

Make the file 9:16, which is 1080 × 1920 pixels. Instagram does not publish a story size, so that is the common standard rather than an Instagram rule. Anything that is not 9:16 gets cropped or scaled, and scaling up is where softness comes from.

Instagram uploads photos at the best quality it can, up to 1080 pixels wide. A wider photo is sized down to 1080, and a photo narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged to 320, so a tiny original gets stretched. Photos keep their resolution only when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; anything outside that is cropped.

That page is about feed photos, so use it as a guide for stories, not a story spec. The point holds either way: a sharp original is your main lever, and a small image saved from a website will look soft however you post it.

For video, Instagram's reel specs ask for at least 720 pixels and 30 frames per second. Our Instagram reel size guide covers those numbers, and the reel safe zone checker shows where the interface covers your text.

If a file is huge, shrink it with an image compressor and keep the width at 1080. Squeezing an already small photo makes it worse; our guide to compressing images for Instagram shows how far to go.

Why re-shared and screenshot stories look soft

Every extra copy costs sharpness. A screenshot only holds the pixels your screen showed, a file sent through a chat app is often recompressed, and a story re-shared from another account is a second upload of a file that was already compressed.

Keep the camera original and post that. If you edit in another app, export at its highest quality instead of screen-recording the preview. For what to do with sharp stories once they work, see our Instagram growth strategy.

Instagram story blurry on iPhone

If a photo looks sharp in your gallery but soft in your story, your phone may be holding a smaller preview and not the full file. Online Tech Tips describes the fix: open the photo in your gallery and let it finish downloading its full-quality version, then share it again. On Android it says to download the original from Google Photos first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Instagram Reels low quality?

Reels share the causes above. Instagram asks for at least 720 pixels and 30 frames per second, with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16. Turn on Upload at highest quality, export a higher-resolution file, and avoid uploading a video that a chat app already compressed.

Does using the Instagram camera make a story sharper?

Not reliably. Online Tech Tips suggests shooting with the in-app camera as a fix for blurry photos, and that is easy to test. Take one shot in Instagram and one in your phone's camera app, post both to Close Friends, and keep whichever looks sharper on a second phone.

Why does my story look blurry to other people but not to me?

You may be comparing the original in your gallery with the posted copy. Open the story from a second account on another phone. If it is still soft, the file is the cause. If it only looks soft on one phone, check that phone's connection and its data-saving setting.

Does a slow connection make stories blurry?

It can. Online Tech Tips recommends switching networks, for example from mobile data to Wi-Fi, and uploading again. That costs nothing, so try it before changing anything else, and compare a short test story posted to your Close Friends list.

Should I update or reinstall Instagram?

Try it if nothing else worked. Online Tech Tips lists installing the latest app update first, then deleting and reinstalling Instagram to clear cached files. Your posts stay on your account, but you will have to log in again, so have your password ready.
