Pick one and watch it get built

To add a link to a Facebook post, paste the URL into the post box ("What's on your mind?") and click Post. Facebook turns it into a clickable link with a preview. There is no special link button; the link goes in the text.

The steps differ slightly for a Page, and the preview is where most people get stuck, so both are covered below.

How to add a link to a Facebook post on a computer

On a computer, click What's on your mind at the top of your Feed, paste the link, add an optional update and click Post. Those are the steps in Facebook's link sharing help.

  1. Open your Feed on facebook.com.
  2. Click What's on your mind at the top.
  3. Paste the link.
  4. Wait for the preview card to appear under your text.
  5. Add an optional update above it.
  6. Click Post.

Facebook adds that liking or sharing a link through Facebook may show up in your Feed or on your profile.

How to add a link to a Facebook post on the app

In the Facebook app on iPhone or Android, scroll to the top of your Feed, tap What's on your mind, enter the link, add an update and tap Post. This is the same route Facebook documents for sharing a link in the app.

  1. Open the Facebook app and scroll to the top of your Feed.
  2. Tap What's on your mind.
  3. Paste the link.
  4. Add an optional update.
  5. Tap Post.

How to add a link to a Facebook Page post

For a Page, switch into the Page first, then paste the link into the post box. Facebook's Page link help says people with Facebook access can share links from a Page, and people with task access use Meta Business Suite.

  1. Click your profile photo, then See all profiles, and select your Page.
  2. Click What's on your mind at the top of the Page's Feed.
  3. Add the link you want to share.
  4. Add an optional update.
  5. Click Post.

In the app, the Page route is Menu, then Options, then pick the Page and tap What's on your mind. After you add the link and tap Next, Scheduling options lets you choose Publish now or Schedule for later before you tap Post. For the full scheduling flow, see how to schedule Facebook posts.

How to remove or change a Facebook link preview

To remove a preview, click X on the preview image before you publish. To change the title or image, you need a domain you own and have verified, and the edit is done in Meta Business Suite.

Facebook says it is removing the ability for any Page to edit how a link appears, to limit the spread of false news. The exception is a verified domain. In Meta Business Suite, go to Content, click Create post, click the link icon in Post details and add your link; Meta says you can only edit links to domains you own, and must verify ownership first.

For any other site, the preview is read from the page's own Open Graph tags, so the fix is on the website, not in Facebook.

Why does my Facebook link show the wrong image?

Facebook reads the preview image from the page's og:image tag and caches it by URL. Changing the image on your site does not update posts already shared, and a replacement image needs a new URL, per Meta's guidance on images in link shares.

To refresh an existing post, open the three dots at its top right and choose Refresh share attachment, as the link sharing FAQ describes. Changes to og:title or og:image apply only to future shares of that link.

If you share links to track a campaign, add UTM parameters first with the UTM link generator, then paste the tagged link.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the link to a Facebook post?

Click the date or time under the poster's name in the post, then copy the URL from your browser's address bar. Facebook's help describes this for posts, comments, photos, shares and videos. To get the link for a profile, Page, group or event instead, open it and copy the address from the bar.

What size should my link preview image be?

Meta recommends at least 1200 x 630 pixels. Images of 600 x 315 or larger show as a large preview; smaller ones still display but much smaller, and the minimum allowed is 200 x 200. Keep the ratio near 1.91:1 so Feed does not crop it, and keep the file under 8 MB.

Why does a new link show no preview image?

Facebook caches images asynchronously, so the image may not render the first time someone shares a URL. Meta's fix is to run the page through its Sharing Debugger before you post, which triggers a scrape. Adding og:image:width and og:image:height tags to the page also lets the image render immediately.

How many images can a Page link preview have?

Facebook says a link preview from a Page can include up to 10 images, each with a description and its own destination URL. Images from the web page may also be added to the preview automatically. If you do not want them, click X on the preview image before you publish.
