Pick one and watch it get built

The YouTube Shorts ideas that are easiest to repeat have a fixed format: one question answered, one thing demonstrated, one before and after. Pick the goal first (views, subscribers, sales), then the format.

Every idea below has an example you can copy the shape of. A Short is a vertical or square video up to three minutes long, but most of these work in under a minute.

YouTube Shorts ideas by goal

Quick, visual formats suit reach. Formats that answer a real question suit subscribers. Formats that show a result suit sales.

YouTube Shorts ideas without showing your face

You can run a Shorts channel with no face on camera by filming hands, screens, objects or places and adding a voiceover or on-screen text.

  • Hands-only tutorial. Film your hands doing a task, like folding a fitted sheet in 20 seconds.
  • Screen recording tip. Show one shortcut on your laptop, like "Close 10 tabs at once".
  • Voiceover over b-roll. Narrate a story over footage of a place, such as "The cheapest meal in this market".
  • Text-only facts. Put one surprising fact per Short on screen, with the source in the caption.
  • Product close-ups. Film one object being used, like a pen testing on five types of paper.
  • Timelapse. Show a long job sped up, like painting a wall or assembling a desk.

Funny YouTube Shorts ideas

Funny Shorts work when the setup is something viewers recognise from their own day. Keep one character, one situation and one punchline per Short.

  • Relatable skit. Play both sides of a common argument, like two roommates and one dishwasher.
  • "Types of people" series. One Short per type, such as the gym regular who never works out.
  • Reaction to your own old video. Watch your oldest upload and comment honestly.
  • Pet voiceover. Add thoughts to your pet's behaviour, like a cat judging the new couch.
  • Fail then fix. Show the attempt that goes wrong, then the version that works.

Shorts ideas that grow a channel

Subscribers come from repeatable series. A viewer who sees a numbered series, like "Day 3 of learning guitar", has a reason to come back.

  • Numbered series. "Day 12 of cooking one new dish a day".
  • Challenge with a rule. "I only spend five dollars on groceries this week".
  • Myth versus fact. "You do not need to wash raw chicken" is the sort of hook that invites comments.
  • One-minute tutorial. Teach one step, like how to set up a pivot table.
  • Common mistake. "Three things beginners get wrong in their first week of lifting".
  • Tool comparison. Two budget tools doing the same job side by side.
  • Question from the comments. Read a viewer question and answer it in one take.

Shorts ideas for businesses and selling

A selling Short shows the product doing its job, or the people and work behind it. Answer what customers ask you every week.

  • Product in use. A candle maker pours, cools and lights one in 30 seconds.
  • Behind the scenes. Pack five real orders and show where they are going.
  • Customer question. "Does this fit a size 12?" answered on camera with the item.
  • Before and after. A cleaning service shows one oven, untouched then finished.
  • Price breakdown. Explain what goes into one product's price.
  • Founder story. One minute on why you started, with one real number.
  • Local tip. A cafe owner shares where to find the best views in town.

YouTube Shorts ideas from content you already have

Cut the best 30 to 60 seconds out of a long video, or turn one idea into several short answers. To reuse a Short on Instagram, see how to post a YouTube video on Instagram. For other formats to rotate with Shorts, see types of social media content.

  • Best moment clip. Cut the sharpest 40 seconds of a long video and add captions.
  • Three Shorts from one video. Turn a ten-minute tutorial into three single-step Shorts.
  • Teaser for a long upload. Show the result in 15 seconds and point to the full video.
  • Comment reply. Answer the most useful comment from your last upload.
  • Old footage, new angle. Use a trip or event clip with a fresh voiceover.
  • Tips list. "Five tools I use every day" built from clips you already shot.
  • Answer a search suggestion. Type your topic into YouTube search and answer the first suggested question.

Only post footage you own or have permission to use. YouTube says unedited clips from others' movies or TV shows, reuploads of other creators' content, and compilations with no original content are not eligible for Shorts revenue.

How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?

A YouTube Short can be up to three minutes long, as long as the video is square or vertical. YouTube applies the three-minute limit to videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024; earlier uploads stay long-form.

RuleWhat YouTube says
Maximum lengthUp to three minutes
ShapeSquare or vertical
Applies to uploads fromOctober 15, 2024 (standard channels)
Over one minute with claimed contentBlocked and not eligible for monetization

The claimed-content rule is on YouTube's Shorts monetization policies page. To publish a batch, see how to schedule YouTube Shorts, and draft titles with the YouTube post generator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I post my Instagram Reels or TikToks as YouTube Shorts?

Yes, if the video is yours, square or vertical, and within three minutes. Upload the original file rather than a screen recording of the other app, so it stays sharp. YouTube treats reuploads of other creators' content as ineligible for Shorts revenue, so this applies to your own videos only.

What music can I use in a Short without a copyright claim?

YouTube says royalty-free music from the YouTube Audio Library does not receive a Content ID claim. Songs in the Shorts Audio Library can usually cover up to 90 seconds of a three-minute Short, though some tracks are limited to 60 or 30. A claim on a Short over one minute blocks it.

Can I make money from Shorts with fewer than 1,000 subscribers?

Not from ads, which need 1,000 subscribers. Fan funding opens at 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and either 3 million Shorts views in 90 days or 3,000 long-form watch hours in a year, per YouTube. You must also be 18 or older.

Can a long video I already posted become a Short?

Not by itself. YouTube says videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 stay long-form, even if they are vertical and under three minutes. To get a Short, upload a square or vertical clip of up to three minutes as a new video.
