Pick one and watch it get built

The main types of social media content are text posts, images, carousels, short video, long video, Stories, live video, polls, documents, articles, link posts, user-generated content and reshares. Each does a different job, and platforms differ in which ones they support.

Pick the type for the job, then check the platform offers it. The table lists each type with a platform that supports it, the limit that platform documents, and an example.

Limits come from each platform's own help page and change over time.

Carousels, short video and Stories

A carousel suits anything with steps, since each slide carries one idea. Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one, and TikTok photo posts take up to 35 photos. Check image sizes for each platform so nothing crops badly.

Short video is the format most likely to reach people who do not follow you. YouTube says Shorts are up to 3 minutes long. Instagram lets a reel run to 20 minutes, but reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences.

Stories suit anything with a short life. Instagram says they disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours unless you add them to highlights, so use them for a countdown or today's offer, not for anything you want found later.

LinkedIn's own formats

LinkedIn's help page lists Start a post, Video, Photo and Write article, with poll and document under the More menu. A poll has two to four options and defaults to one week. A document post is the one to use for checklists and slide-style guides, because people can read it without leaving the feed.

Link posts, user-generated content and reshares

A link post sends people to something you published elsewhere. Reddit's own site says communities share stories, links, images and videos, but each community sets its own limits on self-promotion, so read how to post on Reddit first.

User-generated content is anything a customer made about you, shared with their permission. A reshare is someone else's post shared with your own comment added. Both cost almost nothing to produce, which is why they are useful on weeks you have no time to shoot anything.

Types of content by purpose

A common way to group content is by what it should do for the reader. GoFish Digital uses four groups: educational, inspirational, entertaining and conversion-focused. It is one framework, not a rule. The table maps those purposes to formats.

PurposeTypical formatsExample
EducationalCarousel, document, articleA seven-slide care guide
InspirationalCustomer photos, long videoA customer's before and after
EntertainingShort video, poll, Stories"Which flavour should we retire?"
Conversion-focusedLink post, Story with a link"New colours are in" with the product page

Spread posts across purposes instead of repeating one. The Instagram post ideas list gives a concrete example for each, and the content calendar template shows the mix at a glance. The Instagram content ideas generator can suggest topics. For more ideas sorted by effort, see content creation ideas. If you schedule ahead, SociaHive can schedule feed photos, videos and carousels to several platforms from one place, though not Stories or Reels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are all the forms of social media?

Social media covers social networks (Instagram, LinkedIn), video platforms (YouTube, TikTok), discussion communities (Reddit) and short-form text networks such as X, Threads and Bluesky. Platforms in the same group support similar content types, which is why a carousel fits Instagram while a discussion thread fits Reddit.

What is the difference between a content type and a content pillar?

A content type is the format, such as a carousel or a poll. A content pillar is the recurring topic, such as customer stories or care tips. Any pillar can use any type, so a care-tips pillar might run as a carousel one week and a short video the next.

Can I use the same content on every platform?

Reuse the idea, not the file. A video can go to Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, but length limits differ: Shorts run up to 3 minutes and Reels up to 20. Re-caption and re-crop for each platform, and check image sizes before you post.

How many types of content should I post?

Start with two or three you can make well. A business that posts only product photos tends to give people little reason to follow. Pairing one teaching format with one conversation format, such as a carousel and a poll, covers more ground without stretching you thin.
