To duet on TikTok, open the video, tap Share, tap Duet, record your side, and post. A duet puts your video next to someone else's in a split screen, and both play at the same time.

TikTok's Duets help page gives these steps. Not every video allows duets, which is why the button is sometimes missing.

How to duet a video on TikTok

To duet on TikTok you use the Share button on the video you want to react to. After you tap Duet, TikTok opens the camera with the original video beside you, and you record, edit and post as with any other video.

  1. Tap the Share button on the side of the video you want to duet.
  2. Tap Duet at the bottom of the share menu, and swipe along the row if you do not see it.
  3. Add effects, filters or other camera tools if you want them.
  4. Tap the Record button to start and stop recording, then tap the check mark to continue.
  5. Add a filter, voice, text, stickers or effects in the editor.
  6. Tap Next to add a description, hashtags, tags, a location or a link, or tap Your Story to post it there.
  7. Tap Post to publish, or Drafts to save it. Drafts are visible only to you.

Adobe's guide adds that you pick a layout for the two videos before you record.

Who can duet your videos

You choose who can duet your videos in your privacy settings: Everyone, or Friends, meaning followers you follow back. TikTok says you need a public account for anyone to be able to duet you.

Duet is controlled by the same setting as Stitch. On TikTok's Stitch page, the path is:

  1. Tap Profile, then the menu button, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Privacy, then Reuse of content.
  3. Tap Allow reuse of content from and choose Everyone or Friends.

TikTok adds that turning Stitch off also affects who can duet your posts, so the two switch together.

How to turn duets off for one video

You can turn it off per post, either before you publish or afterwards. Before posting, tap More options on the Post screen and switch Allow reuse of content off. For a video you already posted, tap the More options button on the video, tap Privacy settings, and switch the same setting off.

This only stops new duets. Duets that already exist stay until you remove them, covered below.

Why you can't duet a video

If Duet is missing, the video's owner has not allowed it. TikTok states that not all videos have Duet turned on. These are the causes TikTok's pages support:

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
No Duet in the share menuThe creator turned off Allow reuse of content for that videoNothing on your side; pick another video
Duet missing on a creator you followThey limited it to Friends and do not follow you backAsk them, or use a different video
Duet missing on every videoThe creator's account is privateDuets need a public account

Swipe along the bottom row of the share menu before you decide it is gone: TikTok says you may need to swipe to find Duet.

How to remove duets made with your video

You can delete duets made from your video. Open Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Reuse of content, then Reuse of content history. Pick the video, tap More options, and choose Remove all posts.

Read the confirmation carefully. TikTok says this permanently removes your original post and all associated Duet and Stitch videos, so download your video first if you want to keep it. If a single duet breaks the Community Guidelines, report it instead.

If you add a custom cover to your duet, TikTok image sizes lists the dimensions, and the TikTok comment generator can draft replies to the comments it gets. To invite someone instead of reacting to a video, see how to collab on TikTok.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a duet and a stitch?

A duet plays the original video beside yours for the whole clip, with both playing at the same time. A stitch takes a short clip of the original, which Adobe says is up to five seconds, and then plays your reply. Use a duet to react in real time, and a stitch to answer something specific that was said.

Can I use a video from my camera roll in a duet?

Not directly. Adobe says the duet camera requires you to record live in the app, and suggests downloading the original and combining the two in an external editor, then uploading the result. If you do that with someone else's video, check that you have the right to reuse it.

Whose profile does a duet appear on?

Only the profile of the person who recorded it. TikTok says the original video stays on the original creator's profile. The duet's own privacy settings, meaning who can watch, comment or download it, are set by the person who made the duet, not by you.

Can I duet a private account's video?

No. TikTok says an account must be public for others to duet its videos, so a private account's videos cannot be dueted. If you want people to duet you, switch to a public account, then set Allow reuse of content to Everyone or Friends in your privacy settings.
