YouTube Citation Generator

The upload date is in the description box under the YouTube video. The date you watched it is used by MLA only; the video length by Chicago only.

Add the video title and the channel name (or the uploader's real name) to see your citations.

APA 7 format for a YouTube video

Author or Channel. (Year, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. YouTube. URL

The title is in italics and in sentence case: capitalize the first word, proper nouns and the first word after a colon, and leave the rest lower case, even if the video title on YouTube is in title case. When the uploader's real name is known and differs from the channel, write it as Last, F. M. followed by the channel in square brackets.

Channel as author

Nature Lab. (2024, March 5). How bees build honeycomb [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123

Real name and channel

Smith, J. [Nature Lab]. (2024, March 5). How bees build honeycomb [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123

MLA 9 format for a YouTube video

Author. "Title of Video." YouTube, uploaded by Channel, Day Mon. Year, URL. Accessed Day Mon. Year.

YouTube is in italics as the container. Write the title in title case, inside quotation marks; the generator keeps the title exactly as you type it. MLA leaves https:// out of the link and abbreviates months longer than four letters (Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.). If the creator's name isn't known, start with the title; if the author and the channel are the same, leave out "uploaded by".

No known real name

"How Bees Build Honeycomb." YouTube, uploaded by Nature Lab, 5 Mar. 2024, www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123. Accessed 15 Oct. 2026.

Chicago author-date format for a YouTube video

Author. Year. "Title of Video." YouTube video, length. Month Day, Year. URL.

The year follows the author because the in-text citation is (Author Year). The length of the video is optional but common; it is shown on the video's progress bar. Chicago's notes-and-bibliography style puts the same details in a different order, so check which of the two your course or publisher uses.

With video length

Smith, Jane. 2024. "How Bees Build Honeycomb." YouTube video, 12:34. March 5, 2024. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123.

Questions

How does the YouTube citation generator work?

Copy four things from the video page into the form: the title, the channel name, the upload date and the link. Add the uploader's real name, the date you watched it or the video length if you have them. The generator writes the APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago citations as you type; copy the one you need, and the italics come with it.

How do I cite a YouTube video in APA?

Channel Name. (2024, March 5). Title of video [Video]. YouTube. URL. The title is in italics and in sentence case. The generator above fills this in from the details you enter.

Who is the author of a YouTube video in a citation?

The person or organization that uploaded it. If the channel belongs to a person and you know their real name, use the real name; APA then adds the channel in square brackets, as in Smith, J. [Nature Lab]. If you only know the channel, the channel name is the author.

What is the publisher of a YouTube video?

YouTube. In APA 7 it goes after the [Video] label as the publisher; in MLA 9 it is the container, in italics; in Chicago it appears as "YouTube video". You don't name Google or the uploader as the publisher.

Where do I find the upload date?

In the description box under the video, next to the view count. On phones, tap the description to open it. If a video shows only a relative date such as "2 years ago", open the description to see the full date.

How do I cite a YouTube video in the text of my paper?

APA uses the author and year: (Nature Lab, 2024). MLA uses the author or, with no author, a short form of the title: ("How Bees Build"). Chicago author-date uses author and year without a comma: (Nature Lab 2024). To point at a moment in the video, add a timestamp, for example (Nature Lab, 2024, 3:15).

How do I put a YouTube video in a bibliography?

Add the full citation to your reference list (APA), works cited (MLA) or bibliography/reference list (Chicago), sorted by the first word, which is the author or, in MLA without a known author, the title. Use a hanging indent, as the citations above are shown.

Do I need the access date?

Only for MLA, and even there it is optional; it helps when a video might be removed or changed. APA 7 and Chicago don't use an access date for a YouTube video.
