How this actually works
There is no "flip" operation in Unicode, so this works by substitution: "a" becomes "ɐ" (Latin small letter turned a), "e" becomes "ǝ", and so on, borrowing from the IPA Extensions, Latin Extended and Lisu blocks. The reversal matters as much as the substitution — flipping characters without reversing their order produces upside-down letters in forward order, which is not the same thing.
Where it breaks
- Several characters have no turned counterpart in Unicode and are passed through the right way up — capitals are especially patchy.
- Screen readers read the substitute characters by their real names (a turned "a" is announced as such), so flipped text is meaningless to them.
- It will not match in search, and some fonts render the rarer turned characters as boxes.
