Mirror Text Generator

Mirror writing reverses the order of your characters and swaps each one for a mirrored look-alike, so the text reads normally when held up to a mirror. Type below and copy the result.

How this actually works

Unicode has no mirroring operation, so this substitutes characters whose shapes resemble reflections — "b" for "d", "ɘ" for "e", "ƨ" for "s" — drawn from Latin Extended and IPA blocks, then reverses the string. Letters that are already symmetrical, like A, H, I, M, O and T, need no substitution at all.

Where it breaks

  • Coverage is approximate. Several letters have no mirrored counterpart and are passed through, so the reflection is not perfect.
  • It is a visual trick, not a transformation a screen reader can convey.
  • True mirroring of arbitrary text requires an image, not characters — this is the closest plain text gets.

Frequently asked questions

What is mirror writing?

Text written in reverse so it reads normally in a mirror — famously used by Leonardo da Vinci in his notebooks. Here it is approximated with mirrored Unicode characters.

Why do some letters look the same?

Symmetrical letters such as A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y are their own mirror image, so they do not need changing.

Is mirror text the same as upside down text?

No. Mirror text reflects horizontally, as in a mirror. Upside down text rotates 180°, which flips both horizontally and vertically.
