How this actually works
Every character is followed by a run of combining marks from the Unicode Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F). A combining mark has no width of its own — it stacks onto the character before it — so piling dozens of them onto one letter produces the vertical smear. The base letters are untouched underneath, which is why zalgo text can still be stripped back to readable text.
Where it breaks
- Many apps clamp or strip excessive combining marks. Instagram, iOS and some Android keyboards will flatten heavy zalgo, so the light and medium settings travel further than heavy.
- Screen readers may read every diacritic individually, which turns a short word into a long unintelligible string.
- Some platforms treat extreme combining-mark stacking as abuse and will reject or truncate the text.

Why does my zalgo text look flattened after pasting?
Several apps deliberately limit how many combining marks they will render per character to stop text overflowing its container. If heavy zalgo collapses, try the light or medium intensity — those survive far more places.
