How this actually works
Each visible character gets U+0336 (combining long stroke overlay) appended to it, and underline uses U+0332 (combining low line). Combining marks have no width — they render on top of the preceding character — so the line appears to run through the text while the letters underneath stay completely intact and readable if the marks are stripped.
Where it breaks
- A few fonts draw the stroke slightly offset, so the line can look broken between characters.
- Screen readers ignore or mispronounce the combining marks, so the crossed-out meaning is lost entirely.
- Some plain-text fields normalise the marks away on save.

How do I cross out text on Instagram?

Why is the line broken in some apps?
