How this actually works
Superscript digits and several letters live in the Latin-1 Supplement, Superscripts and Subscripts, and Phonetic Extensions blocks. Digits have complete coverage (⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹), which is why numeric uses like footnote markers and simple exponents work perfectly while alphabetic coverage is patchy.
Where it breaks
- Letter coverage is incomplete: superscript has no "q", and subscript lacks most consonants. Those characters pass through at normal size.
- For real mathematics, use proper equation formatting where you have it — Unicode superscript cannot express nested exponents.
- Screen readers announce these as their Unicode names rather than as raised or lowered text.
