How this actually works
Unicode reserves a Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block containing complete bold, italic, bold-italic, script and fraktur alphabets. They exist so mathematicians can distinguish a bold vector from an italic scalar in plain text, but nothing stops you using them as styling. The characters carry their own weight, so no formatting support is required from the app.
Where it breaks
- These are mathematical symbols, so screen readers frequently announce them as "mathematical bold small a" rather than reading the word.
- Search engines and in-app search will not match bold Unicode against the same word typed normally.
- A few older Android builds render parts of this block as empty boxes.
