Gothic Text Generator

Gothic text — properly called blackletter or Fraktur — is the dense, angular script used in medieval European manuscripts. Unicode includes a complete Fraktur alphabet, so you can copy and paste the look without installing anything.

How this actually works

The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block contains both Fraktur and bold Fraktur alphabets. They were encoded for mathematical notation, where Fraktur capitals traditionally denote Lie algebras — an origin that has nothing to do with aesthetics, but it means every letter you need already exists as a character.

Where it breaks

  • Blackletter is genuinely hard to read at small sizes. Capital I, J and S are frequently misread.
  • Digits have no Fraktur form and pass through as normal numerals, which can look inconsistent mid-word.
  • Screen readers announce these as mathematical Fraktur characters rather than reading the words.

Frequently asked questions

Is gothic text the same as Old English text?

They are the same Unicode characters. "Gothic", "Old English" and "blackletter" all describe the Fraktur alphabet — anyone offering them as different fonts is showing you the same code points twice.

Why do numbers stay normal in gothic text?

Unicode never defined Fraktur digits, so numerals are passed through unchanged rather than replaced with something from another style.

Can I use gothic text on Instagram?

Yes, in your bio, captions and display name. It will not work in the username field, which is restricted to letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
