Message your fans one to one. Instagram broadcast channels explained: who can create one, how to make and grow it, what members can do, and DM broadcasts as another way to reach fans.
Pick one and watch it get built
An Instagram broadcast channel is a public, one-to-many chat inside the Instagram inbox. You send text, photos, videos, voice notes and polls; members can react, reply and vote but cannot start their own messages. To make one, open Messages, tap Compose, then Create channel. Instagram says you need a public account with more than 1,000 followers.
This guide covers who can create a channel, the steps, how to get people to join, what members see, and when a DM broadcast to people who messaged you is the better tool.
What is an Instagram broadcast channel?
Instagram launched broadcast channels in February 2023 and opened them worldwide in June 2023. It describes them as "a public, one-to-many messaging tool for creators to directly engage with their followers at scale" (About Instagram).
The key points:
- One sender, many readers. Only you, and any collaborators you invite, can post. Members react, reply to messages and vote in polls, but cannot send messages of their own (Instagram Help Center).
- Public. Anyone on Instagram can discover a channel and view it. Member reactions, replies and poll votes are visible to anyone, too (Instagram Help Center).
- In the inbox. A joined channel sits next to normal message threads. Members get a notification for new messages unless they mute it.
- Formats. Text, photos, videos, voice notes and polls, plus prompts and live video in a channel, according to the Help Center's list of channel features (Instagram Help Center: Channels).
Today Instagram often just says "channels" in the app.
Who can create a broadcast channel on Instagram?
Instagram's Help Center says channels "can be started by a public account with more than 1,000 followers" and are "slowly being released", so not every account has the option yet (Instagram Help Center).
If you meet the follower count and do not see Create channel, check that your account is public and your app is up to date. There is no form to request access.
How to make a broadcast channel on Instagram
These are the steps for the Instagram app on Android and iPhone, from Instagram's Help Center.
- Open Messages. Tap the Messages icon at the bottom of the app.
- Tap Compose. It is in the top right of the inbox.
- Tap Create channel. This option only shows if your account can create channels.
- Set it up. Enter a channel name, choose the audience, choose when the channel ends, and choose whether to show it on your profile.
- Tap Create. Your channel is ready; nothing goes out until you send the first message.
When you send that first message, all of your followers get a one-time notification inviting them to join. After that, only people who joined get notified about new messages.
Subscriber-only channels. If you use Instagram Subscriptions, you can set the audience to paid subscribers for exclusive updates, or to all followers (About Instagram).
How to find the broadcast channel on Instagram
Open Messages and tap Channels at the top of the inbox. Your own channels and the ones you joined are listed there. To find a creator's channel, look for the channel link on their profile or a channel sticker in their Stories.

How to get people to join your channel
The first-message notification is your biggest moment, so make that first message worth opening. After it, use these invite options from the Help Center:
- Invite link. Share the channel link anywhere. You cannot turn the link off, but you can reset it to get a new one.
- Stories. Share the channel to your story, or press and hold a message in the channel and tap Share to story.
- Profile. Show the channel on your profile when you set it up.
- QR code. Tap the channel name at the top of the channel, then QR code, and print it or put it on a slide.
What to post in a broadcast channel
Channels work best for short, frequent, personal updates. Ideas that fit the format:
- "New video drops Friday at 6 p.m. Here's a 10-second preview."
- A poll: "Which color should we restock first? Sage or sand?"
- A voice note explaining a decision behind the scenes.
- An early discount code for members, posted an hour before the public post.
- A question prompt to collect topics for your next Q&A.
Keep the channel's promise narrow. "Restock alerts and early codes" tells people exactly why to stay.
Broadcast channel vs DM broadcast: which should you use?
A broadcast channel is one public room. A DM broadcast is one private message sent to each person in their own chat. They solve different problems.
| Broadcast channel | DM broadcast | |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets it | Followers who joined | Contacts you choose, such as a tag or segment |
| Visibility | Public, discoverable by anyone | Private, one chat per person |
| Replies | Visible to everyone | A private conversation with you |
| Requirements | Public account, 1,000+ followers, gradual rollout | Each person must have messaged you recently |
| Personal details | None | Can use the person's name and answers |
| Best for | Fan updates, polls, announcements | Follow-ups, offers to interested people, support |
The limit on DM broadcasts comes from Instagram's rules for businesses. A business account can message a person only inside a messaging window that opens when the person acts, and for most actions it lasts 24 hours (Meta for Developers). After that, the person has to write to you again.
How SociaHive fits
SociaHive does not post to Instagram broadcast channels. Instagram offers no way for outside apps to send channel messages, so you write those yourself in the app.
What SociaHive does is the private, one-to-one side:
- Start conversations. A comment-to-DM automation sends a DM to everyone who comments a keyword, which opens the messaging window and adds them as a contact.
- Broadcasts to opted-in contacts. Send one message to a tag or segment of your contacts. SociaHive checks each person's messaging window and skips anyone outside it, and anyone who opted out, instead of sending a message Instagram would refuse.
- Sequences. Send a short series of follow-ups after someone starts a conversation.
- One contact list. Tags and fields from every conversation build a list you can sort later. The Instagram CRM guide covers that side.
Many creators use both: a channel for public updates, and DM automation for the people who raised their hand. To plan the posts that drive people into either one, see how to schedule Instagram posts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Instagram broadcast channel free?
Yes. Creating and joining a channel is free in the Instagram app. A channel limited to paid subscribers is part of Instagram Subscriptions, where members pay you.
Why can't I create a broadcast channel on Instagram?
Instagram says channels need a public account with more than 1,000 followers and are still being released gradually. If you meet the follower count, make your account public and update the app. Otherwise, wait for the rollout to reach you.
Can people reply in an Instagram broadcast channel?
Members can react, reply to messages and vote in polls, but they cannot send new messages of their own. Their replies and reactions are visible to anyone, so treat them as public comments.
Can I schedule posts in an Instagram broadcast channel?
Instagram's Help Center does not describe scheduling for channel messages, and outside apps cannot post to channels. Plan your messages ahead and send them yourself, or schedule your feed posts with a scheduler.
How do I leave or mute a broadcast channel?
Open the channel from the Channels tab in your inbox and look for the mute and leave options in its settings. Instagram says members can leave or mute a channel at any time, or turn off a creator's channel notifications entirely.
