Pick one and watch it get built
To see Instagram insights, open your profile and tap Insights, or tap View insights under any post or Reel. On a computer, go to instagram.com and choose Dashboard. You need a public account; it can be personal or professional, according to Instagram's Help Center.
Insights cover any period in the last 90 days, and individual posts, Reels and Stories stay viewable for up to two years. For a wider look at growing an account, see our Instagram growth strategy.
Who can see Instagram insights
Insights are available to public accounts, personal or professional. Instagram's help page says you need "a public (personal or professional) account," so a business or creator account is not required to read your numbers.
A professional account still adds things: boosting is only available to professional accounts, per the same page. If you switch to a private account you lose insights, but you can get past data back by going public again within 90 days, according to Instagram.
How to see Instagram insights on the app
On the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap Insights. You can also open your professional dashboard. Tap any metric for detail, and tap the (i) in the top-right corner to read its definition, as described in Instagram's guide to insights.
Choose the period from the dropdown at the top. Instagram's date range page lists 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days, or a custom range you set with a start and end date at least one day apart.
How to see Instagram insights on a computer
On instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left menu. Professional accounts then pick Insights under For professionals; personal accounts pick Your dashboard under Your insights and tools. Use the Insights dropdown to switch between Account and Content. This is the path in Instagram's help.
The web date picker offers 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or a custom range inside the last 90 days. The 60-day preset appears only in the app.
How to see insights on a post, Reel or Story
Open the post or Reel and tap View insights. For a live Story, open it and swipe up. For an expired Story, open the insights screen on your profile and find it under Top content based on engagement, as Instagram's Stories help page describes.
Reels were not tracked before 14 May 2021, so older Reels show nothing, per Instagram. Stories disappear after 24 hours, but their numbers stay available for up to two years.

What Instagram insights metrics mean
Instagram's current insight names are Views, Viewers, Interactions, Accounts engaged and Total followers. Views counts plays or displays, including repeats. Viewers counts unique accounts. Instagram's definitions are in the table below.
| Metric | What it counts | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Times content was played or displayed, repeats included | Account, posts, Stories, Reels |
| Viewers | Unique accounts that saw it at least once | Account, Stories, Reels |
| Interactions | Likes, comments, saves and shares | Account, posts, Stories |
| Accounts engaged | Unique accounts that interacted | Account, Stories |
| Profile activity | Actions taken on your profile after seeing the content | Posts, Stories |
| Watch time and average watch time | Total and average time a Reel was played | Reels |
| Follows | Accounts that followed after seeing your Reel | Reels |
If you remember "reach" and "impressions," Viewers is the closest match to reach, and Views, like impressions, counts repeat plays. What reach on Instagram means explains the difference.
Two more sections sit on the overview. Total followers needs at least 100 followers and shows growth, top locations, age range and the times your followers are most active. Content you shared lists every post, Story and Reel in the period, and you can filter it by media type, reach, interactions and time frame.
Why you can't see Instagram insights
The usual causes are a private account, an account that went public only recently, or too few people. Instagram says audience demographics need you to reach or engage more than 100 accounts, and followers insights need at least 100 followers, per its insights page.
Try these fixes in order:
- Make the account public. Insights need a public account.
- Pick a longer preset such as Last 30 days if Last 7 days hides demographics.
- Give it time after going public; Instagram says you may not be able to see past insights if you have recently made your account public.
Instagram Insights: how to use the numbers
Start with your views by content type, split between followers and non-followers. That breakdown shows which content type gets you found by new people, according to Instagram for Creators. Instagram for Creators also calls out shares, which it says show how valuable or relatable content is, and follows, which show you are reaching new people who want more.
To judge whether a post did well for your audience size, divide Interactions by Viewers with our engagement rate calculator. Compare that rate across posts, not against other accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Instagram Insights accurate?
Good enough for direction, not for exact counts. Instagram labels Viewers and Accounts engaged as estimated and in development. Meta says estimated metrics come from statistical sampling or modeling, not a straight count, and suit directional guidance; in-development metrics should not be used for historical comparison of advertising performance, per Meta's metrics labeling page.
What do impressions mean on Instagram?
Impressions were the total number of times your content was seen, repeats included. Meta deprecated the metric for media created after 2 July 2024, per Meta's developer documentation. Views is the current equivalent in the app: times content was played or displayed.
How do I switch off insights on Instagram?
You can't turn insights off on their own; they depend on your account being public. If you switch to a private account you lose access to insights, and you can get past data back by switching to public again within 90 days, according to Instagram's Help Center.
Are Instagram Insights free?
Yes. Instagram describes them as free insights for public accounts, and there is nothing to subscribe to. Ad insights, such as cost per result, appear only if you boost content, and boosting needs a professional account. The built-in numbers cost nothing, per Instagram's guide.
