Tuesday to Thursday afternoons, roughly noon to 7 p.m. local time, are the safest window in Sprout Social's 2026 data. Hootsuite leans to Monday evenings and late afternoons instead, so use both as a starting test and confirm with your own followers. This guide is part of our best time to post on social media series.

What the 2026 studies say about the best time to post on Instagram

Weekday afternoons are the common result, and weekends are the weakest. The studies disagree on details because each measures different accounts, so a time that wins for a US retailer may fail for a coach with European followers. Times are the audience's local time.

StudyDataHeadline result
Sprout Social, 2026Nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles, Nov 27, 2025 to Feb 27, 2026Weekday afternoons; weekends weakest
Hootsuite, updated July 2026Over 1 million posts across 118 countriesMonday 3 to 9 p.m. is the first listed window
Later, 2024 dataOver 6 million feed posts, Jan to Oct 2024Older data, and an outlier: highest engagement rates between 3 and 6 a.m.

Best time to post on Instagram today, by weekday

Monday to Thursday afternoons are where the two newer studies overlap, so start your tests there. They disagree on weekends, which is where your own insights matter most. The table lists each study's windows for every day of the week.

SundayAmong the weakest days12 to 3 p.m.

Sources: Sprout Social and Hootsuite. On Mondays, 3 to 4 p.m. appears in both, and Hootsuite advises avoiding posts after 10 p.m. Sprout also publishes windows by industry; for healthcare, for example, it lists Mondays 12 to 9 p.m. and Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Best time to post Reels and Stories

Reels follow the same windows as other posts: Sprout's 2026 data lists identical hours for Reels and says timing matters more than format, and Hootsuite gives no Reels-specific times. Later's 2024 Reels data (over 975,000 Reels) showed early-morning peaks, which the newer studies do not. See our Reels strategy guide for what makes a Reel spread.

No study gives Story-specific hours. Stories last 24 hours, according to Instagram, so time them to when your followers are active in Insights.

How to find your own best time to post on Instagram

Your own audience data beats any study, because it reflects the people who actually follow you. Instagram shows it in Insights, and on a public account Instagram's Help Center says total followers insights include the times your followers are most active, and the view needs at least 100 followers. For where to find it, see how to see Instagram insights.

  1. Open Professional dashboard, then Insights, then Total followers, and find the most active times chart.
  2. Post in the two or three busiest windows, changing only the time.
  3. Compare reach and saves per post, then keep the winners.

Followers being online is not the same as followers engaging, so confirm with results. As a practical rule, not a study result, give each window about four weeks. For a starting schedule, try our free best time to post on Instagram calculator and the content calendar generator.

A scheduler can book those hours ahead. SociaHive's content scheduler suggests a time per account from that account's own past performance when there is enough Instagram data, and says so when it falls back on general heuristics. It schedules feed photos, videos and carousels, not Stories or Reels, and the free plan has 30 posts a month. See how to schedule Instagram posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are peak posting hours on Instagram?

Peak hours are the hours when most of your followers are active, so they differ by account. Instagram's Insights shows them under total followers, once you have at least 100 followers. A study's peak is an average across many accounts, so use it to pick what to test and let your own chart decide.

What is the best time to post on Instagram today?

Look up today's weekday in the table above, then check the most active times chart in your Insights for that same day. If the two agree, post there. If they differ, trust your own chart, since it reflects your followers rather than an average of thousands of accounts.

What is the 5:3:2 rule for social media posts?

It is a content-mix guideline, not a timing rule. Semrush describes it as a ratio for every 10 posts: five curated from other sources, three your own and two personal. It is a marketing framework with no official platform definition, so use it only to balance your feed.

Is early morning a good time to post on Instagram?

Usually not, in the newest data. Sprout Social advises avoiding early mornings, while Later's 2024 data found its highest engagement rates between 3 and 6 a.m., an outlier. If your followers are in a far-off time zone, an early slot can still work, so check your Insights.
