Pick one and watch it get built
To post a video on Twitter (X), open the post composer, add your video with the media or gallery button, trim it if needed, write your text and click Post. Without X Premium, the video can be up to 140 seconds long and 512 MB.
The steps are nearly the same on the web and in the app. The limits and the reasons an upload gets stuck are what trip most people up.
How to post a video on Twitter
Use the composer on x.com or in the X app, add the file, and post. X's Help Center describes the steps for the web and the apps.
- Open the composer: click Post or the compose box on x.com, or tap the Post icon in the app.
- Add the video: click the gallery button on the web and choose a file, or pick one from your phone's gallery in the app.
- Record a new clip instead by tapping the camera icon in the app.
- Trim the video in the app by dragging either end of the bar, then tap Trim.
- Preview it, then write your post text.
- Click or tap Post.
On the web, X prompts you if the file is not in a supported format. In the app, tap the X on the video thumbnail to remove it before posting.
Your text still has a character limit, so check long captions with the X character counter first. The rules are in the X character limit guide.
Twitter video length and size limits
Without X Premium you can upload videos up to 140 seconds long with a maximum file size of 512 MB. X Premium and The X Subscription plans (Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra) allow longer uploads, as X's video help page states. Videos above 2 hours and under 4 hours are accepted at 720p.
| Account | Max length | Max size |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 140 seconds | 512 MB |
| X Premium or Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan | Under 4 hours at 1080p | 16 GB |
X's Premium page describes the Basic tier's longer uploads as about 3 hours and 8 GB at 1080p on x.com and iOS, so check which plan you hold. X's page does not list file formats. Microposter and Clipchamp both list MP4 and MOV. Microposter recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, and gives a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, up to 60 frames per second, and aspect ratios from 1:2.39 to 2.39:1.
Why your Twitter video will not upload
Most failed uploads come from a file that is too long, too big or in an unusual format. Check the length and size against the table above first, then check the format. Re-exporting the clip as MP4 fixes more problems than any other single step.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Longer than 140 seconds on a free account | Trim it, or split it into two posts |
| Over 512 MB on a free account | Compress or re-export at a lower bitrate |
| Web upload refused as unsupported | Re-export as MP4, per Microposter and Clipchamp |
| Video looks fine locally but fails | Export with H.264 video and AAC audio, as Microposter recommends |
| Phone upload comes out shorter than the original | Widen the trim bar before posting; Microposter, citing a Rotary guide, says the app can default to a 45-second window |
Upload from a computer if a phone upload keeps failing. Microposter says desktop behaves more predictably.

Add timestamps to your Twitter video
Type a time such as 1:30 in your post text and X turns it into a link to that moment. X's help page says timestamps work on a post with one video attached, in the formats x:xx, xx:xx, x:xx:xx or xx:xx:xx, with up to 50 in a post.
You can post timestamps from iOS, Android and the web, but X says they are only clickable on iOS for now. They do nothing in a post with several videos, or with a video and an image. They are useful for a long video, such as a talk with a list of chapters in the post text.
Schedule a video post on X
You can queue a video instead of posting it live. X's own scheduler is covered in how to schedule tweets. SociaHive can also schedule X posts with video on its paid plans. After it has been up for a while, you can find your most liked tweet to see how it did.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload a 3 minute video on Twitter?
Not on a free account, which stops at 140 seconds (2 minutes 20 seconds). With X Premium or a paid X Subscription plan, X's video page allows uploads under 4 hours, so 3 minutes is fine. Without a subscription, split the video into two posts or share a link.
Can I add a video to a thread?
Yes. After you record a video in the iOS app, X's Help Center says you can tap Add to thread to connect it to your last post, then tap Add to share it. Each post in the thread follows the same length and size limits as a single post.
Can I edit a video post after publishing?
Only with a Premium plan. X's Premium page says Edit post gives a one-hour window to make a limited number of changes, including tagging someone or reordering attached media, on original posts and quotes. Without Premium, delete the post and upload again.
How do I stop videos from playing automatically?
On x.com, click More, then Settings and privacy, then under Accessibility, display and languages click Data usage and choose an Autoplay option. In the apps, the same path leads to Video autoplay, with options such as Wi-Fi only or Never. X says autoplay is set separately for the web and each app.
