Pick one and watch it get built
To make a YouTube name, pick a channel name that tells viewers what they will watch, then claim a matching @handle that is 3 to 30 characters long. Keep both short, easy to spell and free of numbers you will outgrow. You set them in YouTube Studio under Customization, on the Basic info tab.
This guide covers the difference between a channel name and a handle, the handle rules, a six-step process, 100 original name ideas by niche, and channel description ideas. To get suggestions from your own keywords, try the YouTube name generator.
Channel name vs @handle
A YouTube channel has two names, and they do different jobs.
- Channel name: the display name viewers see under videos, in search results and on your channel page. It can have spaces, capital letters and more than one word, and it doesn't need to be unique.
- @handle: a unique address for your channel, like
youtube.com/@yourname. People use it to tag you in comments and to find you directly. No two channels can share one.
Most creators set the handle to match the channel name with the spaces removed. When the exact handle is taken, add a short word like "tv", "hq" or your city rather than random numbers.
YouTube handle rules
YouTube's handle rules say a handle:
- Is 3 to 30 characters long for most scripts. Some scripts, such as Han or Hangul, have shorter minimums.
- Can use letters and numbers, plus underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots, but not at the start or end.
- Isn't case-sensitive, so
YourNameandyournameare the same handle. - Must be unique and can't be shared. A channel can have only one handle, and handles can't be sold or transferred.
- Can't look like a URL or a phone number, and must follow the Community Guidelines.
YouTube also says it can change, reclaim or remove a handle at any time, so don't build a business on a handle that infringes a trademark or imitates another creator.
How to make a YouTube name in 6 steps
- Decide what the channel is about. Write one sentence: "I make ___ for ___." The nouns in that sentence are your naming material.
- Choose a style. Descriptive (clear but common), personal (your name), or brandable (a made-up or unusual word). Descriptive names are easiest to understand. Brandable names are easier to own.
- List 20 candidates. Mix keywords, your name, a place, a mood and a verb. Use the ideas below as patterns.
- Check them out loud. Say each one, then ask someone to type it after hearing it once. Drop anything they spell differently.
- Search for conflicts. Search YouTube for your top choices, then check that the @handle, a matching domain and your handle on Instagram and TikTok are free.
- Set it in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to Customization, then Basic info. Edit the name and handle and publish. A name change can take a little while to show everywhere.
Pick a name you can keep for years. If your topic shifts, a broad name survives the change, while a very narrow one like "Cheap Pasta Dinners" can trap you.
Should you put your full name on YouTube?
It's a trade-off. A personal name works if you are the brand, such as a coach, musician or teacher, and it makes you easy to find. A topic name works better if you may add editors or guests later, or you want privacy. A middle path is a first name plus a topic, like "Dev Cooks" or "Sara Builds".
If privacy matters, use a name that isn't your legal name and keep personal details out of your channel description and videos.

Short, brandable and unique channel names
Short names are easy to say, easy to type and still readable in a small thumbnail corner. Four ways to build one:
- Combine two words: Lanternfish, Fieldnote, Pocketwise.
- Shorten a word: "Studio" to "Studi", "Creative" to "Creaty". Only do this if the result is still easy to spell.
- Use a rare real word: Quill, Marrow, Cinder, Thistle.
- Add a suffix: "-ly", "-ful", "-hub", "-lab" or "tv" are common. They help when the plain word is taken.
Put a keyword near the start if you want the name to say what the channel is about. If you want more options, the YouTube channel name generator gives short, brandable suggestions. If you plan to put the name in a banner or profile picture, check the sizes in the YouTube image sizes guide.
YouTube channel description (bio) ideas
Your channel description is the "About" text on your channel. YouTube allows up to 1,000 characters, but the first line or two is what most people see, so lead with who the channel is for. The YouTube bio generator writes drafts for you, and these templates show the shape:
- Topic and schedule: "Beginner-friendly Python tutorials every Tuesday. New to coding? Start with the first playlist."
- Who it's for: "Weeknight dinners for busy people. Short recipes, real grocery lists, no fancy tools."
- Personal angle: "I'm Sam, a nurse turned home cook. Cheap meals, honest results, new video every Sunday."
- Promise plus proof: "One fitness tip in under 5 minutes. 150+ videos, no equipment needed."
- Business inquiries: "Work with me: [email protected]" on its own final line.
A good description has four parts: what you cover, who it's for, how often you post and how to reach you. Add links to your site or other channels in the links section below the description.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many views do I need to make $10,000 a month on YouTube?
There is no fixed number, because earnings depend on your audience's country, topic, video length and ad rates, plus sponsorships and other income. Check YouTube's Partner Program requirements in the Help Center for what you need to turn on ads, and treat any view-to-dollar claim as a rough guess.
Can a 7 year old be a YouTuber?
YouTube sets minimum ages for accounts, and the rules depend on the country, so a child under the minimum age generally can't hold a channel on their own. A parent or guardian can run the channel and feature the child. Check YouTube and Google's age requirements before you start.
Can I get 1,000 subscribers?
Yes, plenty of channels do, but it takes consistent uploads around one clear topic. A name that states the topic helps new viewers understand the channel in a second, which helps them subscribe.
Can I change my YouTube channel name later?
Yes, in YouTube Studio under Customization, on the Basic info tab. YouTube may limit how often you can change the name and handle, so check the limits shown in Studio before a rebrand. Some creators report losing a verification badge when they change a name, so confirm the rules for your channel first.
Is the channel name or the handle more important?
The channel name is what viewers read, and the handle is what they type or tag. Choose the channel name first, then make the handle match as closely as possible.
