A TikTok Story stays visible for 24 hours. People can see it from your profile, their inbox, and the For You and Following feeds, and they can reply to and react to it.
There is no setting that lengthens the 24 hours. The only way to keep a Story in view longer is a Highlight, covered below. The 24-hour lifespan is not new: TechCrunch reported in March 2022 that Stories last 24 hours before they are automatically deleted, during the pilot.
How to make TikTok Stories last longer with Highlights
A Highlight saves Stories to your profile so they stay visible for more than 24 hours. Expired Stories are not lost: TikTok's steps have you pick them from your Story archive. You can group Stories into different Highlights and give each a cover image and name.
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Create Story Highlights button.
- Select the Stories you want from your Story archive, then tap Add at the bottom.
- Choose a cover image and enter a name.
- Publish the Highlight to your profile.
You can also start from a live Story: tap your Story, then tap Create Story Highlights at the bottom. To edit a Highlight, press and hold it, then tap Edit Highlight. To remove one, press and hold it, tap Delete Highlight, and confirm.
One catch: a Highlight's visibility matches the settings of the original Story, so a Story limited to some viewers stays limited in the Highlight.
