How X counts styled text

X does not count characters one for one. Letters in the common Latin ranges count as 1, and most other characters, including the bold, italic, script and double-struck alphabets, count as 2. Links always count as 23, whatever their length.

So styled text costs twice as much of the 280. A bold opening line of 40 letters uses 80 of your characters. The preview on this page counts the styled text the way X does, so you can see the cost before you paste.

Where styled text helps on X

A bold first line can work as a headline for a long post or the first post of a thread. Small caps or bold labels can separate parts of a list. Your display name and your 160-character bio accept styled text and are seen in every reply you make.

Keep the important words plain: names, product terms, hashtags and anything people might search for. Screen readers also read styled letters poorly, so a post written entirely in script excludes some readers.

Questions

What font does X use?

X uses Chirp, the typeface Twitter introduced in 2021, for posts and the interface. You cannot change the font others see your posts in, so styled posts use Unicode characters that look like bold, italic or script letters.

Do fancy fonts use more characters on X?

Yes. X counts most styled letters as 2 characters, because they sit outside the ranges X counts as 1. A 200-character sentence in bold can use up the whole 280. The preview above shows how many characters X will count for your text.

Can I use a different font in my X name?

You can in your display name, which accepts Unicode text. Your handle (the @name) only allows letters, numbers and underscores, from 4 to 15 characters, so it cannot be styled.

Does X have bold text?

Standard posts have no bold button, so bold on X is made with Unicode bold letters like the ones above. They paste into posts, replies and your bio and look bold to everyone.

Does styled text affect X search?

Yes. X search looks for normal letters, so a word written in bold Unicode is not found by someone searching that word. Keep names, product words and hashtags plain.
