How the Rate Is Calculated

The model here is the one most brands and agencies actually use, rather than a flat rate per follower.

It starts from a CPM — a price per thousand people reached — that varies by niche, because a finance or B2B audience is worth more per head to an advertiser than a general lifestyle audience. That is multiplied by your reach and then adjusted by your engagement rate, which is the proxy for whether your audience is real and paying attention. Finally it scales by content type: Stories below a feed post, Reels above it, and a bundle priced as a package.

The practical value of a CPM model is negotiating leverage. It moves the conversation from "what do you charge" to "here is what this audience is worth", which is a much stronger position when a brand opens with a number.

What the Calculator Deliberately Leaves Out

Four things routinely justify pricing above the calculated figure, and none of them are in the formula.

Usage rights: permission to run your content as paid media or on the brand's own channels is a licence, priced separately and by duration.

Exclusivity: agreeing not to work with competitors for a period has a real cost to your future income and should be paid for.

Production load: scripted concepts, multiple locations, props or talent are production work, not posting.

Turnaround: a rush deadline that displaces other work carries a premium.

Quote the base rate from the model, then list these as line items. Itemised quotes get negotiated on scope; single lump sums get negotiated on price.

Reading a Rate Back to a Brand

When a brand pushes back, the useful move is to answer with the audience rather than the fee. "My rate reflects an audience of X in this niche engaging at Y percent, which is above the category average" is a different conversation from "that is my price".

It also tells you when to walk. If a brand is anchored on a per-follower number that ignores engagement entirely, they are buying reach as a commodity and will keep pushing the price down. Creators who consistently earn above the calculated rate tend to be the ones who can show performance from past collaborations — saved posts, DMs generated, link clicks, codes redeemed. Start collecting those numbers before you need them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I charge per Instagram post?

Pricing depends on follower count, engagement rate, niche, and content type. Nano-influencers (1K-10K) typically charge $10-100, micro (10K-100K) charge $100-1,000, and mid-tier (100K-500K) charge $1,000-5,000 per post.

Do Reels cost more than static posts?

Yes. Reels typically command a 1.5x premium over static posts because they require more production effort and tend to reach a wider audience through the Explore page and Reels tab.

How much should I charge for an Instagram post?

The starting point most brands recognise is a CPM model — a rate per thousand people reached, adjusted for niche and engagement. The calculator above applies niche CPMs and an engagement multiplier to your follower count, then scales by content type. Treat the result as your anchor, not your floor: usage rights, exclusivity and turnaround all justify charging above it.

How much is 10,000 followers worth?

There is no fixed figure, because two accounts with 10,000 followers can be worth very different amounts to a brand. A 10,000-follower account in a high-value niche with 6% engagement is worth several times a 10,000-follower lifestyle account at 1%. Run both through the calculator and the difference is obvious — which is exactly the argument to make to a brand that quotes you a flat per-follower rate.

Why do Reels cost more than feed posts?

Because they reach further and take longer to make. The calculator prices a Reel above a static post and a Story below one, reflecting both the production effort and the distribution: Reels are pushed to non-followers, while Stories reach a fraction of your audience and disappear in 24 hours. A bundle is priced higher again because it is a campaign, not a post.

Should I charge more for usage rights?

Yes, and this is where most creators leave money behind. The calculator prices the post itself. If the brand wants to run it as a paid ad, use it on their own channels, or keep it indefinitely, that is a separate licence — commonly quoted as a percentage uplift on the base fee, scaled by duration and exclusivity. Agree it in writing before you shoot, not after they ask.
