Bluesky has no formatting, so Unicode fills the gap

Bluesky posts are plain text. The post box has no bold or italic buttons, and markdown is not converted, so asterisks stay asterisks. That is why people search for Bluesky italics: the only way to get them is to paste characters that already look italic.

The italic and bold italic styles on this page are the closest match to normal emphasis. Use them for a single word you would stress when speaking, or for titles of books and films.

Counting and handles

Bluesky counts posts in graphemes, so each styled letter counts once toward the 300. You can style a line without losing room for the rest of the post.

Your handle is a domain name and cannot be styled. Your display name and 256-character description can, and they appear on every post and in search results for people, so a small styled touch there is seen often.

Questions

Can you use italics on Bluesky?

Not with formatting: Bluesky posts are plain text, with no bold, italic or underline options. You can paste Unicode italic letters from this page, which look italic to everyone reading the post.

Does Bluesky support text formatting?

No. A Bluesky post is plain text plus links, mentions and hashtags. Markdown such as **bold** shows up as literal asterisks. Unicode styles are the only way to get a bold or italic look.

Do styled letters use more of the 300 characters on Bluesky?

No. Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters you see, so a bold letter counts as one, just like a plain letter. That makes styled text cheaper on Bluesky than on X, where most styled letters count as two.

Can I style my Bluesky handle?

No. A handle is a domain name, such as name.bsky.social or your own domain, so it only takes characters a domain allows. Your display name and description accept styled text.

Are styled posts accessible on Bluesky?

Less so. Screen readers read styled letters as separate symbols or skip them. Use styling for a word or a short heading and keep the main text plain.
