How this actually works
Each kaomoji is assembled from real Unicode characters — Japanese punctuation, mathematical operators, Cyrillic and Greek letters, and brackets. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) is a bracket, two degree signs and combining marks. Nothing here is an image, which is why kaomoji survive in plain-text environments where emoji get stripped or replaced.
Where it breaks
- Kaomoji rely on characters from many scripts, so a device missing one of those fonts shows boxes mid-face.
- Proportional fonts can shift the alignment, so a face that looks right in one app may look lopsided in another.
- Screen readers attempt to read each character individually, which produces a long stream of symbol names.

What is kaomoji?
Kaomoji (顔文字, "face characters") are Japanese emoticons made from text characters and read upright, unlike Western emoticons which are read sideways.
Why do some kaomoji show empty boxes?
They combine characters from several scripts. If a device lacks a font covering one of them, that character renders as a box while the rest of the face shows normally.
Do kaomoji work on Instagram?
Yes — they are plain text, so they paste into bios, captions and comments and are not stripped the way some special characters can be.
