How this actually works

There are two different things people call a heart. β™₯ and β™‘ are typographic characters from the Miscellaneous Symbols block β€” they inherit the surrounding text colour and behave like letters. πŸ’— and πŸ’– are emoji, drawn in colour by the platform. The typographic ones are what you want in a bio, because they sit on the line properly and match your text.

Where it breaks

  • Emoji hearts render differently on every platform β€” an iPhone, an Android and a desktop browser will each draw the same character in their own style.
  • Variation selectors matter: ❀ can render as text or emoji depending on the app, which is why it sometimes appears black and sometimes red.
  • Text-art hearts built from multiple characters can wrap awkwardly if they land at the end of a line.

Using this in an Instagram bio

The typographic hearts (β™₯ β™‘ β₯) are the ones used in most Instagram bios β€” they take the colour of your text, stay the same across devices, and do not compete with the emoji already in your caption.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy and paste a heart symbol?

Tap any heart above and it copies to your clipboard, then paste it wherever you need it. No keyboard shortcut or emoji picker required.

What is the difference between β™₯ and ❀?

β™₯ (U+2665) is a typographic character that takes on your text colour. ❀ (U+2764) is normally rendered as a red emoji. If you want a heart that matches the rest of your text, use β™₯ or the outline β™‘.

Can I use heart symbols in an Instagram username?

No. Usernames accept only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Hearts work in your display name, bio, captions and comments.

Why does my heart look different on someone else's phone?

Emoji hearts are drawn by each platform's own font, so the same character looks different on iOS, Android and desktop. Typographic hearts like β™₯ and β™‘ stay much more consistent.
