Pick one and watch it get built

A social media team covers five functions: strategy, community management, content production, paid advertising, and measurement. One person can hold several of them, and the manager is the role that comes first.

Sculpt's guide names those five functions, and Agorapulse says the social media manager "needs to come first if you are building a social media team." The sections below describe each role, then show how teams are shaped at different sizes.

What are the main social media team roles?

The main social media team roles are the manager or strategist, the content creator, the community manager, the analyst and the paid social specialist. Each owns a different output: the plan, the posts, the conversations, the numbers and the ad budget.

RoleOwnsTypical output
Social media manager or strategistThe plan and prioritiesChannel strategy, content calendar, monthly review
Content creator (writer, designer, video editor)Making the postsCaptions, graphics, short video
Community managerEverything that comes back inReplies to comments and DMs, escalations, brand voice in conversation
AnalystMeasurementReports, test results, recommendations
Paid social specialistAd spend on socialCampaigns, audiences, budget pacing

Agorapulse's guide lists the manager, content writer, content manager, community manager, social media analyst, graphic designer and ads specialist, and adds a videographer for brands that publish video. Sculpt groups the same work into the five functions above.

What does a social media manager do?

A social media manager decides what gets posted, where and why, then makes sure it ships and is measured. On a small team the manager also writes, schedules and replies. On a larger one the job narrows to planning, approvals and reporting. The practical test: the manager is the person who can say no to a post.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not list social media managers as a separate occupation. Its nearest groups are advertising, promotions and marketing managers (median pay $165,780 in May 2025) and public relations specialists, who are "usually in charge of monitoring and responding to social media questions and concerns" (median pay $74,750 in May 2025).

Social media content creator versus community manager

A content creator makes things that go out. A community manager handles what comes back: comments, DMs, mentions and complaints. Creators are judged on output, community managers on response time and on how complaints end. If you have one hire, decide which half hurts more right now.

Repeat questions on Instagram can be handled with comment-to-DM and keyword replies, which leaves the community manager the conversations that need a person. A DM automation tool does this.

What is the analyst's role on a social team?

The analyst turns platform numbers into a decision: do more of this, stop that, test this next. On small teams the manager does it. A dedicated analyst makes sense when you run many channels, paid campaigns and regular reporting to executives.

The nearest BLS occupation is market research analysts, with a median pay of $78,760 in May 2025 and projected growth of 7% from 2025 to 2035. Our social media audit tool shows what an analyst would check first.

How big should a social media team be?

Team size follows channels and volume, and neither source gives a fixed headcount. These are the shapes they describe.

2 peopleSocial media manager and a designer, for an ecommerce brand on Instagram and TikTokAgorapulse
4 peopleManager, community manager, videographer and graphic designer, for a broader mix of channelsAgorapulse

Agorapulse also suggests hiring part-time or four days a week rather than underpaying a full-time hire when budget is tight. Its guide and Sculpt's both advise writing down each role's expectations before you hire.

Who is responsible for what? A RACI table

RACI assigns each task a Responsible person (does it), an Accountable person (signs it off), anyone Consulted and anyone Informed. Asana's RACI guide says each task should have only one Responsible and only one Accountable. The table below is an example for a team with a manager, a creator, a community manager and an analyst, not a standard.

Where one person holds two roles, the table shows which hats should stay separate: the person who writes a post should not be the only one who approves it. A scheduler with an approval step enforces that, and SociaHive's content scheduler offers one with team seats on Pro (5) and Agency (30).

What goes wrong with social media teams

  • No clear owner. If social is "everyone's job," posts are late and replies go unanswered. Name one Accountable person per task.
  • Hiring a specialist too early. Agorapulse's order starts with the manager, so add a paid specialist after the basics work.
  • Creator answering every comment. Output slows and replies lag. Move replies to someone else or automate the repeat questions.

If you are weighing an outside team against hiring, see agency versus doing it yourself. A shared content calendar keeps the roles in step. To give each role its own step from idea to post, see the content creation workflow, and for remote teams, the best collaboration tools for remote teams.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of a media agency?

A media agency plans and buys advertising, and a social media agency usually takes over strategy, content and reporting as an outside team. You supply brand access and approvals while the agency fills the roles you lack, so check which of the roles in this guide it actually covers before signing. Some agencies also resell another provider's work under their own name, which is covered in white label social media management.

How much do social media team members earn?

Pay varies by city and seniority. Agorapulse cites Payscale (October 2024) at $57,822 a year for social media managers, Payscale at $55,505 for content writers, Glassdoor (June 2024) at $50,000 to $76,000 for community managers, and Salary.com at about $77,676 for analysts. These are US figures.

Should a small business hire or outsource first?

Outsource if you need results quickly and lack a plan. Hire if social media is central to sales and you want someone embedded in the business. Agorapulse suggests the social media manager as the first hire, with a designer added for an Instagram and TikTok ecommerce brand. Before that first hire, a founder can follow a startup social media marketing plan.

What role does social media play in a business?

It brings in an audience, answers questions, supports customers and sends traffic to the site. Each role covers one of those jobs: creators bring attention, community managers handle conversation and support, and the analyst checks whether any of it moves sales or sign-ups.
